It’s always hard, playing a game that has such a reputation attached to it. Much as we try, people can’t really be truly objective, and it’s hard to look at these sorts of games with fresh eyes. I know all about Earthbound and its impact on gaming. Hell, Undertale is one of my favorite games. But how does the original game stack up? Can it?

It holds up pretty well, I’ve found. Honestly, most of my problems with it are just personal quibbles of mine with rpgs (I tend to get some rpg fatigue around 3/4ths through one). While game did drag slightly at some points, exploring this goofy cartoon world with all its heart was lovely. And even when I getting a little sick of encounters near the end, the ending itself more than made up for it. Giygas is an immensely satisfying yet sorrowful boss to take down. It’s an excellent closer to the experience.

I don’t think Earthbound completely lives up to its lofty reputation but really, what could? It’s still immensely enjoyable and it was a ton of fun to see the inspiration behind so many other games.
