Has an amazing atmosphere and soundtrack, but that's really about it. None of the characters are memorable or really all that interesting, the controls SUCK (and no, you can't use the excuse of it being a product of its age when there were third person games at this time with much better controls, and no, having bad controls doesn't enhance "the players fear" or make the game scarier, just frustrating)

I honestly was having a lot of fun with this game up until the Cybil fight. Genuinely one of the worst fights in any game I've ever played. It actually sucked up a lot of the fun I was having with this game and solving its puzzles, exploring every room and killing monsters.

I can definitely see the influence this game has and see why it's so important, but I'm just hoping that I'll like Silent Hill 2 more since I've been dying to get into this series

You're saying there were games with better controls at the time?
I bet you can't even name one.

Ummm... resident evil 2? Metal gear solid? In terms of third person horror/action games. Since you just told me name games period that have better controls, crash bandicoot, ape escape, spyro, super mario 64 all of these are third person and have infinitely better controls.

Silent hill 1 doesn't even have the excuse of having only fixed camera angles like RE2
