You should really be playing the Pixel Remaster instead if you've never played FF1 before, but a lot of the charm still remains in spite of the wonky and easier balancing of this version. There are neat little cameo bosses as side/post-game content hailing from the other classic FF games, but ultimately you don't miss out on a ton by missing this version of the game.

As for the underlying game, it's ff1. Like most NES jrpg the gameplay is mostly managing resources in dungeons and exploring in the overworld. Surely if you're here you already know if you're interested in playing the third most simplistic and earnestly straightforward jrpg ever made.
