When I heard that Ember Lab, the makers of the fantastic Zelda short Terrible Fate, were making a video game, I was completely over the moon. The film in the Majoras Mask universe is a masterpiece in terms of atmosphere and graphics. And that's exactly what they've done again with Kena: Bridge Of Spirits. I have rarely seen such a beautiful, playful and detailed game world. The characters are wonderfully animated and anyone whose heart doesn't melt at the sight of the Rot is dead inside. Gameplay-wise, it's an action-adventure with a hub and lots to discover. You could say that the game is divided into three chapters and each one is a bit different, which gives the player nice variance. At one point the path is relatively straight forward. Then you are thrown into a mini open world and sometimes the path feels like little challenges. This kept me hooked throughout the game. Well, almost: because what most people won't be aware of when they start the game is that Kena: Bridge Of Spirits has slight Souls tendencies and this is especially noticeable in the challenging bosses. Especially the second one almost made me cry. However, all the bosses are relatively manageable on the normal level. So Kena does not reach a Dark Souls level of difficulty here. Nevertheless, the very cuddly look belies the combat system. As an overall package, Kena is terrific and, in my opinion, a must-play for 2021.
