This game is like an 11-year-old who played a bunch of Fantasy RPG games and decided to make their own game. The overall plot fits on a coaster and fits the typical RPG trope. The graphics style looks like it was drawn by their 6-year-old sibling. The dialogues are strange, often nonsensical and odd. AND I LOVE IT! Everything fits together all so well. For an RPG game, the world is strangely familiar because it feels like earth but it is mixed up with a huge amount of weird, even bizarre enemies and characters. The music is awesome and stays in your memory even after years. Especially Sanctuary Guardian and Welcome to Your Sanctuary + A Flash of Memory. It really feels like a globe-trotting giant adventure for some young kids. The only problem I have with Earthbound is the grind in the end, that some important information could get lost is so vaguely phrased that you can get stuck. But this is really not that often and it still stays a fantastic piece of software. I am going to rewatch the ending with all those photographs again and sob over this beautiful journey.
