Forgive Me Father is a classic boomer shooter of the 2010s and 2020s. It's fast, action-packed, and full of colorful keys. Sound familiar? In general, the game feels like a Doom clone (which was the name for boomer shooters back in the day) that has been draped with a lovecraftian cosmic-horror setting. But it's carving its own path by offering two selectable characters, a fairly extensive skill tree, and special abilities.

And Forgive Me Father actually manages to pull it off quite well. Players fight their way through various locations that couldn't be less standard for a Cthulhu-themed game. Fishing villages, ruins, asylums, and places between worlds that offer one or two non-euclidean twists. The weapon arsenal looks fantastic, but it's ultimately just the typical pistol, shotgun, rocket launcher, and so on. The enemies are diverse, attacking either with hefty melee attacks or projectiles that you should skillfully avoid.

If you enjoy Lovecraftian horror and boomer shooters, you'll definitely be satisfied here. Unfortunately, the story is only incidental, even though you can find expositional notes here and there. Even the ending is a big cliché and left me somewhat underwhelmed. However, it only slightly detracted from the overall experience.

Overall, Forgive Me Father is a solid entry in the boomer shooter genre that manages to carve out its own identity. With its lovecraftian cosmic-horror setting, varied locations, and diverse enemies, it's an enjoyable romp for fans of the genre.
