And here we are. After the fantastic entry with Anniversary, the logically improved sequel Legend, we finally have the conclusion, Tomb Raider Underworld, in our hands. And at first glance, I must say it looks really good. Back in 2008, I was almost speechless at how good it looked. It was just strange that Lara suddenly looked different. In addition to the weapon switching, grappling hook, and lighting systems introduced in the direct predecessor, there is now a completely revamped 'Free climb' system here. We no longer just jump from ledge to ledge, but we can reach places by climbing along walls using small ledges (almost in a brick-like manner). It's not challenging from a gameplay perspective, but it somehow feels realistic and satisfying. If only it weren't for the jank. Ah yes, the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy and its technical issues. It was already noticeable in Legend, but Underworld takes the cake. I have never died so many times because Lara missed a jump, didn't grab onto ledges, clipped through pillars and the floor, and more. It sometimes completely robbed me of the fun. There are also 1-2 places where it's not clear where to go, which can be frustrating after a while. In addition to climbing, there's the typical shooting, which is definitely not a strength of the trilogy. You aim towards an enemy and hold down the shoot button until they're dead. In terms of the story, it continues the search for Lara's mum and where she disappeared. Underworld once again draws upon various mythologies and weaves them into a cohesive and understandable narrative. The levels are often well-designed, but unfortunately, they fall short of the locations in the first two instalments. Also, the reunion with old characters wasn't necessary, or it could have been better developed. If you can overlook the jank and are a fan of the Tomb Raider series, you might still have some fun, but it's definitely the weakest game in the trilogy and ranks towards the bottom third of all Tomb Raider games. Not only because the ending as well as the twist are just unsatisfying.
