You play as Cassie, a young human who gets swept away during a storm. She finds herself on an island with Luna, a magical robed fox who rules over this series of islands. It’s up to Cassie to help Luna clean up after the storm to return the islands to their former glory!

The story is really straight forward and there isn’t too much to it other than as a set up for the gameplay.

Visuals

Luna’s Fishing Garden is done in pixel art with what looks to be handdrawn backgrounds. It’s very cute and colorful. I liked all of the different animal sprites that Cassie meets as you uncover more islands. Although Cassie herself is rather plain and generic.

Sound Effects + Music

The music in Luna’s Fishing Garden is fine. It’s very upbeat and cutesy, but it does get repetitive very quickly. When the background music fades out, you can really hear the ambient noises which are quite nice. I did prefer them to the actual music.

Gameplay + Controls

Luna’s Fishing Garden is a simple and relaxing game based around fetch quests. All of the animals you meet along the way will want something from you, usually fish, but also other small things. Their tasks are never too complicated, and you’ll always know exactly where to go to get what you need. It’s all very linear, with no exploration.

The controls are pretty standard and easy to get the hang of. I used an Xbox controller on my PC, so I was mainly just using the left stick to move around and select items from menus, and the A button to select or progress dialogue. I did find myself pressing B out of habit to close out of mini games, but that’s not necessary, and it actually brings up the game menu.

The main mini game is of course fishing. You have two styles to choose from: a more relaxing style and a challenging style. I stuck with relaxing, since that’s what I wanted out of this game. You’ll simply hold A once the fish is on the hook, then briefly release when it wiggles, then hold again until it’s reeled in. Some fish are more wiggly than others. The challenging fishing mode appeared to be like the one in Stardew Valley, which I suck at.

My favorite part was filling in Nigel’s field guide, which is essentially this game’s version of ACNH‘s critterpedia.

Replayability

I enjoyed my time with Luna’s Fishing Garden, but the linear nature of the tasks doesn’t lend itself to replaying. I even got all of the achievements in one go. It took me about 3 hours to 100%, so it’s definitely a game that can be replayed without taking up too much time.

Overall

Luna’s Fishing Garden is a super cute and relaxing game. It’s exactly what I needed at the time that I played it. You don’t need much brain power or gaming skill. It’s just a fun time.
