Doom 64 is just a strictly worse version of Doom 2, which I already didn't like as much as Doom 1.
It plays and looks worse than both Doom 1 and 2 for me. Movement is more slidy and everything feels less responsive and slower, even when running. The game loses something in translation to actual 3d. The textures are less interesting and just don't appeal as much as the classic 2d spritework in Doom 1 and 2.
The levels themselves do have more aesthetic coherency than Doom 2, however.

Level design in D64 is reminiscent of Doom 2 in that it seems to be more interested in tricking the player than having a compelling experience. Most of the levels seem to consist of either teleporting a ton of demons into the room with you or, to shake things up, teleporting you into a room with a ton of demons. It feels like the level designers here took their cues from Petersen and McGee, rather than Romero, unfortunately.

I really didn't have any fun with this game at all.
