Still a death march mechanically, but the story is a real improvement. Real character choice! Companion quests! Roleplaying! They also managed to, with Throne of Bhaal's companion where-are-they-nows, capture a portion of the high of Fallout's ending slides. That minor flourish is just about the only thing this game has over its sequel, but I'll take that little victory.
