the fan game was better
at first you're like oh shit cool i get to send the enemies i kill to other people and i get the ones they kill, but after like half an hour you realize 90 percent of the players don't know you can choose a level besides 1-1 to put in the starting level roulette. once you get to the last 5 players in the round it's just looping 1-1 and 1-2 constantly because those are the easy levels. occasionally it gets interesting when someone decides to kill a Bowser or Lakitu or some Bloopers but ultimately it's just too repetitive for its own good. the fan game was basically just a speedrun challenge which is an old gimmick but is still more fun than sitting in front of 30 Goombas and spamming the fire flower. am i sad it's gone? yes. Nintendo is such a shitass with these timed release things, it's a wonder they didn't make the 3D All Stars cartridges self-destruct so literally no one could enjoy it. but if this game didn't get executed by Nintendo Executive Firing Squad i probably wouldn't ever play it again anyway.
