i think i can finally accept this as the definitive version of dark souls, particularly when fixed up with the original armor textures (which were horribly flattened in this one, for reasons i cannot fathom), a reshade profile which adjusts the lighting and contrast to be a bit closer to that of the original game (gotta have that heavy chiaroscuro and golden glow), and a mod which augments and meshes with the game's own online functionality to cycle through each location for possible invasions whether within the limitations of your own soul and weapon levels or infinitely upward. i haven't waited more than a minute or two to invade with this mod, and for me this is an absolute godsend since i am far more interested in 'organic' invasions, world pvp style, than i am in sweaty arena duels at the oolacile township bonfire.

i hadn't actually played this game at all since moving back home to michigan (from portland, oregon) at the end of 2019, and... well, "it feels like going home again" isn't what i want to say: it's more like a refreshing reminder that i haven't lost everything, though sometimes it feels that way. i don't think of too many video games as being mine, made for me, but this is one of them.

It's nice to see another person who doesn't vehemently hate the remaster, wouldn't of been able to play ds myself otherwise. I get the feeling of thinking of a game as yours, dark souls does have this weird way of feeling like home. Hope you're holding up alright zn0, much love <3
The lighting and stuff bothered me when it was first revealed but after many other remasters or remakes with even more egregious lighting changes coming out since, I feel this one's only mildly only by comparison

That said, you have a link to that ReShade profile? I could probably do it myself but my brain short-circuits whenever I think of all the options and configuration it has on offer.
It was thanks to this version I managed to play in the Switch and it ran and played suprisingly very well, I too have fond memories of it, after all is one of my all-time favourites. That feeling of a game ''being mine'' is something I've never felt, but the fact a game can produce feelings like that, feelings of remembrance, it's what makes me love this industry so much.

@moschidae, i was initially pretty put off by this version's changes (it even made backstabs way more obnoxious), but yeah, i've definitely warmed up to it. i mean, i also kinda have no choice in the matter now, myself, unless i want to play the ptde offline, but i really don't mind anymore. of note: apparently keys for the ptde are selling for like 400 bucks on kinguin these days. lol good fuckin grief. i'm holding up ok (disaster is on hold, disability is now a realistic possibility for me)... thank you. you're a total sweetheart.

@blazingwaters, lemme see here.

i'm using the fidelityfx thing at the top here, plus the classic bonfire mod at the bottom

also giving serious consideration to using this beautiful thing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWT9WziEHwA

to say a little more about why i feel this game belongs to me in some way, as we all know it came along a couple of years after demon's souls, about which i feel similarly... and that game was kind of a big return to enjoying video games after burning myself out on world of warcraft like a dumbass and basically quitting games for a year (and dealing with some other heavy irl stuff i don't know if i wanna talk about here lol). i'd recently moved in with my then-girlfriend and we decided to buy a tv and a ps3. demon's souls was the one and only game i knew i needed to play, having loved fromsoft games in the past. long story short, "project dark" was announced at the height of my obsession with demon's souls, and i knew video games were fully and completely back (for me).

The mostly playable out-of-the-box version of this game by a mile.

Also (since you brought Demon's up), I played Demon's Souls with a friend shortly before the pandemic. He never played it before but had played the Dark Souls games and enjoyed them quite a bit. I forget exactly what weapon he made but it was some huge fuck-all hammer thing (or like, a gigantic stone axe? idk I rarely go with heavy weapons), and we were lucky enough to actually invade for the Old Monk fight. He stood to the side of the doorway and flattened the dude as he entered, one-shotting them.

Great game, great experience.

@weatherby: these days, absolutely. i put about 1000 hours into the original ps3 release and ptde for pc each, so i've never had much trouble playing it in any form, but it's fairly inarguable that this is the most functional version even without any sort of modding

lol, you just took me back to invading upper latria with stormruler and blasting people off of its precarious walkways like a jerk

old monk was unlike anything else. sooo great.
@zn0 tysm, I'll put this on my bookmarks for now since it's not an immediate dock but I really appreciate it. That reverb mod's hilarious, but I think I'll keep to vanilla since I've only dabbled with the game for a few hours each time on the 360

@Weatherby That story of Demon's Souls reminds me of the time way back then where my brothers and I hobbled against the Vanguard, wondering how you could even defeat him. I manage to figure it out years later, and the reveal of what happened was both underwhelming but closure-inducing. Really need to finish it on RPCS3...

p.s. this is also brought me back to the old rabbithole of pvp shenanigans like the darkwraith shuffle

this is why non-duelist invasions are where it's at
@zn0 That's a really sweet story, I really hope you are on a better place now and feeling good :). FromSoft's work has always been there in my hardest time, so I too feel a lot of passion for them and Dark Souls is one of the main pillars that made me love videogames even more. And the reminds me that I really, REALLY need to play Demon's Souls, not only because it was the one to start it all, but it also it looks so unique, even to this day.

off topic but I wish you all the luck in the world getting on disability, it was easier for me here in PA but Michigan seems to be OK with taking their sweet time. Don't feel embarrassed about calling them often, I think that's how I got mine to go through earlier than most lol. I'll be cheering for you!!

Hey I'm from Michigan too /waves

I meant "most playable" but you know, given the texture and lighting issues I guess "mostly" is pretty apt too.

Also, echoing moschidae's well wishes!

doubting we have any other metal sickos in the house (please do correct me if i'm wrong), just wanna share a track or two which now bring dark souls to mind whenever i put them on. this one's been stuck in my head as i put together my umpteenth chaos witch. feel free to ignore lol https://youtu.be/7Y2IxZsgXlE

Very touching review... It speaks to me too much. A game that feels like it was made for me, a game that got me through hard times... It's nice to read stuff like this and I hope you're doing well here in Michigan it's still very cold up north I'm gonna cry

Also I am here as a metal sicko, but I mostly only listen to modern stuff so I'm a little fake...

I don't really listen to metal but if I had to Testament would be my pick (not cause of guilty gear... or anything...)

I can see why you think of dark souls, it reminds me of the fight against quelaag for some reason... very harsh and cool

i'm glad to hear it. and don't worry, i'm not a trve kvlt oldschool snob even if a lot of stuff i like falls under that category, hehe. i listen to tons of new stuff, too! https://www.last.fm/user/astralguts

Oooh a lot of good stuff and a lot of new stuff for me to listen to, I'd link mine but I'm too poor for spotify or anything so I don't get anything out of this yet heh.. I'm gonna look through this though, much love <3

I'm gonna be honest I've been looking at this for a bit and I think I'm too dumb to understand what this is hehe... What is it exactly??
@Hilda Soulseek, to my knowledge, is a P2P service regarding music sharing and such, it's what you use to get anything outside of streaming or going on different websites to download them

I use Apple Music so I'm likely to get the deets wrong, but yea.

Also I don't use Last fm anymore so no scrobble sharing for me :(

followed and i guarantee we have more crossover in our tastes than "very low"

also, another metalpost, this time a whole album: into the lair of the sun god by dawnbringer is a traditional heavy metal record from 2012 and possibly the album i spun most frequently while playing dark souls around then because it comes across as almost like an accidental dark souls concept album to me haha

yeah, soulseek is the secret napster that still works as wonderfully now as it did 20 years ago

been a bit since I've listened to metal (adjacent) music but I've been relistening to some good rap recently

been a while since i went for a heavy dip into hiphop, so that's gonna need to happen again soon. my usual fallbacks are wu-tang clan + affiliated, some early '00s southern stuff, chopped & screwed tapes, newer stuff like danny brown or lil ugly mane, etc but i always have more to learn and love
