This game aged surprisingly well, it's ideal arcady fun

I’m not really sure how to pinpoint what’s with these early AM2 arcade titles, but they’ve been fascinating me since I truly got into video games back in my early teens. After getting to know them properly through Shenmue, playing them through these enhanced ports by M2 for the 3DS has been one of the most fun times I’ve spent with games this year, and the mysticism I created around them was kept more alive than ever.

After Burner II is no exception to that and, frankly, it’s the one that amuses me the most, and I can’t exactly explain why.
If I were to guess, I’d say it has something to do with the super fast gameplay and your ultimate objective: unlike other shooters, the actual shooting part is not the real deal here; instead, your primary objective is to survive each of the game’s 23 stages whilst trying to dodge missiles and controlling your fighter jet’s speed when an enemy plane or missile pops up behind you.

At first it will be frustrating and, believe me, you’ll die a lot.
But, once you finally get the hang of it, it becomes one of the most fun arcade games of its era, and the fast paced gameplay will keep you hooked for long enough. Couple all that with how great the game looks and sounds, and you have a true classic of its genre.

This port by M2 is, as always, excellent. Not only you’ll have a perfectly faithful recreation of the arcade original on the palm of your hands, but also a ton of options to adjust the experience to your personal liking and, as with all of these releases, a really nice looking stereoscopic 3D effect.

A super worthy experience to have at least once!

(Also, if you have been wondering, like I was, why is that they always keep releasing II instead of the original After Burner: it is simply an upgraded version of the first game, with extra stages, music and throttle controls. So, you won’t be missing out anything by playing this one instead.)
