So many memories at daycare of waiting my turn and being overjoyed when I finally got a shot at being a baseball star on this game. We had 1 computer, so even watching wasn't that bad. Pablo was always MVP.

The original Backyard Baseball is an all timer without question. But the 2001 edition is the best version of the game. Not just for adding kid versions of MLB players but most of all for increasing the stats to amounts out of 10. Which makes just about every kid playable somewhere in the lineup, rather than just whoever gets Pablo Sanchez wins.
And some of the MLB players have hilarious stats if you actually followed baseball in the 90s. Frank Thomas, who hit 521 home runs and never pitched an inning in his life, has a 7 in batting but a 10 in pitching. Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson both have the same batting stat as future hall of famer Carlos Beltran. As well as Alex Gonzalez. Oh yeah, Alex Gonzalez is the Marlins representative in this game and I'm actually not 100% sure which Alex Gonzalez it's supposed to be.

basically the exact same thing as the first game, only with a few improvements (stacked pro roster, the ability to use more than 1 field during season mode, etc.)

I find myself switching between this and the first one depending on how much I actually want to use the Backyard Kids...which is often, because this game makes the pros hilariously OP

broke: Pablo Sanchez is one of the best virtual athletes in a sports game

woke: if you put pink in your team logo and choose her first, Maria Luna gets a massive stat buff (6, 7, 3, 7, to 9, 9, 9, 10) and becomes easily the best player in the game

Really fun kids game that taps into that playground joy of playing sports for fun. Easy to get to grips with and a lot of fun, silly additions. I love the mixing of pro players with fictional characters. The kids are so memorable too, they feel like they could've been taken from a popular book series or something. Very fond memories of this one.

"You could be a kid for as long as you want when you play baseball."

Ever since I first stepped upon the sandy diamond, squared my feet, and make contact with the ball, I've loved baseball. As a kid, we played video games, watched live games, and even did pick-up games on the sandlot. Always wondering what it would be like if you could play with the pros when they were young like you are. Backyard sports was a wish-fulfillment of sorts. It allowed you to play America's greatest pastime with pro players at your age. Mix that with a diverse and charming group of other potential players and you have yourself one of the most enjoyable pc experiences for a young baseball fan. Whether you built your team around rockin' Achmed or mini Babe Ruth in the making Pablo Sanchez, you had an eclectic club of super children to play baseball with. Backyard Baseball was the start of a love affair between the sporting world and our imaginations. No other depiction of the world of baseball was as colorful and delightful as the one crafted here by Humongous Entertainment. It wasn't the best of the genre, but it was the one that most closely resembled what it felt like to play the game at that age. You can't relive your childhood, but sometimes when I boot this up to play 9 innings with my favorite groups, it almost feels like I am.

We hereby award: The bronze seal of recognition
