Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller

released on Sep 19, 2013

FBI agent Erica Reed has an uncanny talent: she can see the past and piece together how a crime unfolded. But not even this sixth sense could save her younger brother, Scott, from a brutal serial killer. Three years later, the investigation into Scott’s murder has gone cold -- but Erica’s work has only just begun. Jump into Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller, the exciting four-part series that brings Erica face to face with the deranged demons of her past. A serial killer is loose in Boston -- one who seems to be leaving deliberate clues that only Erica, with her unique post-cognitive abilities, can uncover. Is she finally on her way to solving Scott’s murder? Or, blinded by vengeance, is she falling into a trap that could cost Erica her life? And how does this new killer know her secret? Developed by Phoenix Online Studios (makers of the King’s Quest spin-off The Silver Lining), with contributions from veteran game designer Jane Jensen (Gabriel Knight, Gray Matter) and comic book artist Romano Molenaar (Batman, X-Men, The Darkness), Cognition is a thrilling adventure that grips you and won’t let go.

i am mentally ill for this game it is one of the best point and click adventure games alongside Gray Matter oh my goodness gracious

I voted for this originally on Greenlight and I'm certainly not disappointed in the outcome!

I'm a big fan of adventure games and I enjoy crime dramas too so this was really up my alley. The characters and story are all very interesting and interwoven very well, the character Erica is very interesting with attempting to learn and control her powers of precognition, which you have to use later down the line to solve crimes, stop murders and continue this dance of death for this serial killer before someone else is killed.

I'd highly recommend this for any fan of adventure games!

Edit: Forgot to add, There is a problem when playing this game on 64bit systems so I suggest doing the same work around as mentioned on their forums here: http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?topic=15161.0

It's due to hyperthreading issue with the engine and the solution makes the game focus on just one core instead of getting confused with multiples. After I applied this fix the game ran nice and smooth with 0 crashes in it.

The Cognition episodic series appears to be a mixed attempt from a studio, which has nonetheless delivered some notable titles in the genre. The choice of an American thriller comes with its inherent flaws and Cognition hardly escapes this, plunging into violent tropes, under the guise of an ill-acquired maturity. The title is especially gory, especially in its second case, often to excess. The narrative is generally unbalanced, with sequences too contrived to really work, while the pace is smashed by unpleasant back-and-forth – especially with the slow animation. Overall, the studio has failed to find the right tone for its game, so that what should be the subject of substantial development is superficially addressed in jarring sequences. Nothing ever feels natural and the final episode is probably the weakest in terms of quality, because it focuses on the dialogue, which is the weakest point of the series. Leaving aside the thriller aspect, it's interesting to wonder if this succession of violence was necessary in the economy of the game. It seems to me that this question should be answered by the negative, in the light of the Blackwell series, which succeeds more in linking narrative and gameplay. In the case of Cognition, all the mechanics seem badly polished, which is in line with the general weakness of the 3D, still perceptible despite the updates. In the end, the experience of Cognition is never really unpleasant, but it already partly overflows on a feeling of wasted time.
