This 32-map megawad has the gimmick that it has a narrative focus with the end of each level leading into the start of the next. The narrative presence is at its strongest at the beginning of the mapset with the player riding the high of the background story that comes with the text file. By halfway through, the story has turned into a going to a place to go to another place narrative.

I’d take it over nothing, though, because even if the story isn’t very complicated, it still makes the journey more memorable and gives the campaign structure. The finale’s pretty good, too. How’s the play, though? This is a set of medium-sized maps, with medium amounts of enemies and medium amounts of pickups. I usually ended up sucking down every bit of healing across the level and I was never hurting for ammo but I can’t remember a time I was maxed out, especially for cells.

Cells are very scarce in this wad compared to other ammo types. There’s a deemphasis on the plasma rifle and especially the BFG being that you only get at the end of Map 29 and use a lot in Map 30. It might be a warning: you spend 28 levels without the BFG. Maybe that appeals to you, maybe that makes you shiver. I think I’m the latter but at the same time, it’s a unique property of the mod to narrow the arsenal like that so I’m sure it’s somebody’s cup of tea. I think for that kind of trick, your wad should be maybe 10 to 15 maps. Not the full 32.
