Released in 1993 for the Super Famicom, Natsume's Ghost Sweeper Mikami: Joreishi wa Nice Body (ゴーストスイーパー GS美神 〜除霊師はナイスバディ〜, Gōsuto Suīpā GS Mikami 〜Joreishi wa Naisu Badi〜) is a side-scrolling platformer based on the titular manga series where the player controls Reiko through multiple stages. Reiko is armed with a magic baton that can be used to perform several types of melee attacks. The baton can be powered up to shoot various types of projectiles, though these powerups are lost if Reiko takes any damage. It can also be used as a type of grappling hook to access certain platforms. There are also limited uses of magic attacks that hit all enemies on the screen.

My deep dive into the rabbithole of niche japanese games that never got an English release continues as I find this little gem, Ghost Sweeper Mikami: Joreishi wa Nice Body for the Super Famicom.
First of all, the soundtrack slaps. The music is on par with anything else groovy from this era of gaming, and it had me immersed into every level.
The combat was fun for what it was, though frustrating at times. That's just the reality of a retro platformer honestly. The boss fights were pretty cool, all providing something unique, and solid challenge for me. I forget how easy games have gotten nowadays, not to sound like a boomer. But back then games THRIVED off of you dying over and over, it's the arcade mentality.
Ghost Sweeper Mikami was a pleasant surprise, and though not the greatest adventure I've ever been on, provided a unique platformer that took up a Friday morning for me.
I give Ghost Sweeper Mikami: Joreishi wa Nice Body a 7!

Twenty-sixth GOTW finished for 2023. I have absolutely no idea what was happening with the story, but it was silly and fun nonetheless! Platforming was mostly tight and precise (minus the last level) and the variety of weapon attacks and spells was nice. Changing up the levels was fun, as it was more than just straightforward platforming. Hitboxes could be a little weird, and it was often hard to tell what was background art and what was an obstacle on some levels. Still, I had a surprisingly good time with this one!
