Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb

released on Feb 24, 2003

As Indiana Jones, you’ll travel to 1935 China to prevent a powerful artifact from falling into evil hands. This globe-spanning adventure pits you against evil Nazis and the Asian underworld. It’ll take more than just a trusty whip and pistol to avoid the perils of the Emperor’s Tomb. Indy's latest adventure plays out in dramatic fashion thanks to new gameplay features such as brawling combat. This time, in addition to using his trademark whip and pistol, Indy can engage in fierce hand-to-hand combat against foes, many of whom are well-versed in martial arts. Improvised weapons such as shovels, chairs and table legs also can be used to fend off adversaries. The result is a more immersive and more Indy-like gameplay experience, set amidst spine-tingling movie-like action sequences, such as a rickshaw chase in Hong Kong and a spectacular battle atop moving gondolas in the South China Sea area.

Despite its problems, Emperor's Tomb is probably for better or worse the best Indiana Jones action game, not counting Fate of Atlantis. The fight controls, the uses of the whip, along with its artstyle, as well as its sound effects and music give off a very professionally made presentation that isnt stinking of a low budget title. It truly feels like care was taken to make this - for the time - a true Indiana Jones title.

However, the game isn't a well oiled machine. Everything about the movement and physics of the game is very janky. Even when playing with the analog controls properly set up, Indy somehow can't walk in a straight line. The game is also sometimes finicky about whether or not the whip can reach its whippable point. There are also no checkpoints aside from the level load in, so there are the general annoyances of dying near the end of a large level and having to start over again.

With everything set up though, this old windows game is able to be played pretty well on the Steam Deck despite the graphical issue that appears only if the level is outdoors.

Horrendous physics, annoying movement, terrible aiming, incredibly stupid and unfair at points. It made me rage quit many times. Yet was also one of the most fun I've had playing a game in a long time. I'd always come back to it even though it's certifiably janky ass. Good game. Would buy.
