Iron Marines

released on Sep 14, 2017

An RTS game on a Sci-Fi setting made by the same crazy guys behind the Kingdom Rush saga. Players will command several squads of units ranging from specialized soldiers, unstoppable mechas and of course, Hero units both human and extraterrestrial. The fight spans across exotic planets against fearsome alien creatures and factions. This game won’t be a part of the Kingdom Rush franchise. It is an entire new universe to explore. It is also a different genre since this game will be more of a casual RTS.

Really entertaining, hard to make small adjustments to allies positions but fun all the way through

So I was hoping this would be better than Kindom Rush Frontiers. In certain aspects it feels more polished but the game feels more challenging because it needs a bigger screen plus mouse and keyboard. It seems to have this problem more than Frontiers because the units you’re controlling are tiny and it’s hard to select specific units or all units, and that’s with an iPad Pro 12.9 inch! I also realise that I just don’t like the chaotic nature of too many things happening at the same time. Frontiers was more of a typical tower defence where you needed to protect a route. In this, you go through a map, trying to reach your objectives, build stuff along the way and can be attacked from different sides. I would have liked being able to pause the gameplay to observe the situation and make the best decisions. It just doesn’t work for me and that’s on casual.

I’m starting to think these games are either not for me or they need to be played on pc. I still have Junkworld on the iPad. I also have Origins and Vengeance on PC. Maybe third time is the charm?

Exactly what it looks like – Starcraft, but Ironhide style. While it's slick and features a lot of unique art assets, there's not a single RTS mission you haven't already seen here. Iron Marines repeats the sins of the Kingdom Rush sequels by periodically resetting the enemy roster, creating a tedious rinse and repeat rhythm. The only interesting game mechanic is that you can swap your squad classes on the fly, i.e. rangers become snipers after a 3-second cooldown. This keeps management fresh for longer than the mission design deserves.

Quite a fun and good-looking strategy game on a phone, but the lack of information (e.g. damage numbers) and fiddliness (perhaps an inevitability with any non-turn-based strategy game on a cellphone) makes it an occasionally difficult game to play.

Too many times I had troops run into death because I was having difficulty selecting them; or because I had selected both melee and ranged (whether by accident or not) and they ran into melee range with ranged first. The last one kept happening because the ranged units don't stop to shoot at an enemy when in range but instead run into where you directed them and only then start shooting, forcing you to micro them around or just let them take free fire (there might have been an option somewhere to change this, but I don't remember, nor why I didn't use it if there was).

I still enjoyed it, even though not enough to hurry with finishing it before my Play subscription ran out; I also wasn't in the mood to renew it for just this (and another game) that I wasn't that enthused about. However, I might still one day return to this one at least.

While the art style and voice acting is great, the games flaws prevent me from finishing it.

The upgrade system feels more like a necessity rather than simply helping your units. Which wouldn't be an issue if not for the fact that in order to get them you'll either need to grind or do achievements to get the in-game money to get them. Heroes and units also don't show their stats. No stat info page, no info when selecting a unit, nothing. Units also get abilities that you also have no control over. Why? Because screw you for wanting to use them yourself. You can control heroes abilities, but I have no idea how much damage they're dealing.

It just comes across as messy. And I'd rather just play Dawn of War or Lego Battles again.
