Another well done cinematic strategy game by Cinemaware and an improvement over Defender of the Crown. Great visuals, music, and a mix of macro strategy battles combined with action sequences. The little Gauntlet style sequences are probably the weakest part, but other than that it's a solid experience.

What can I say about Lords of the Rising sun? It's a kinda/sorta 4x ish tactical ish game set during the Genpei War, which is kinda neat on its own because most stuff like this is set during the Sengoku era.

You have castles and towns on the map, and you order your army (if you are able to raise more than one army I couldn't figure it out even in a fully translated version) around Japan and they dutifully march. It takes...a while. A long while. And in real time. No turns here.

When you encounter other armies you do battle on a battle map reminiscent of Heroes of Might and Magic, but it's not turned based--you issue "forward", "left", "right", "retreat" or "defend" orders to your little columns of guys who then clash with the enemy. I couldn't quite figure out any great depth beyond that.

If you invade a castle instead of meeting on the open field, you control a single guy in a top-down view, and it's trivially easy to win.

All in all, gosh...I didn't enjoy it very much. Fun cute little graphics though! And also my favorite place on the planet--Sado Island--is depicted, and conquerable!
