Psychic Detective

released on Nov 30, 1995

This game is an innovative slant on the interactive movie. You're Eric Fox, a psychic detective who can transmit his psychic self to others, to see through their eyes and hear through their ears. That way you can find out things about the case you couldn't otherwise. The game has many different conclusions. It's a dark story though, and most people might not want to play through again.

It's like Being John Malkovich with all those mental occupations and first person perspective during gameplay, if it was directed by David Lynch and made some years before that movie. But I wish it wasn't so cartoonish in the acting, editing and story: even if the villain is so over the top it's hilarious, the rest of the script feels like a typical FMV Z-movie in the delivery and charactherization (the main characther is an annoying douche that thinks of pretty women at every chance he gets), and it's very convenient that the teen in skateboard just happens to run into other characthers when going all around the city.

A shame because this premise has potential, chain jumping into other people minds is very satisfactory and there's some tension involved. There was this instance where I jumped into the mind of the villain while conversing with Sylvia and he realized the protagonist was in his head, you could have jumped minds but chose to stay in his head and the connection gets terminated, losing an important tie into a good ending, very intense and demands your attention. The game's macguffin, the "collector", is also put into an interesting use, it allows limited manipulations of other people's feelings towards you, and it could lead to interesting dilemmas through out a game, not only morally, but also gameplay wise it can force you to choose how to approach people (and to garner real emotional effect in the player, I believe the endings of the game should have asked you to sacrifice something at some time, that there could be no real perfect ending, like in Clock Tower).

I hope someone brings this premise to life again while taking it seriously, it could make a very gripping mystery game

My best ending was the "Pretty Bracelet" one 🤣

short, silly fmv game. wish more of these were around
