An expanded game of Scratches

Dark Legends surround the old abandoned Blackwood house, secluded far away in the northern wastelands. For writer Michael Arthate, this cold, solitary atmosphere is fodder for his restless imagination. But Michael soon becomes distracted by the mysteries offered up, as he follows a trail exploring and delving into the secrets of the past. As he is drawn deeper into the story, his sleep is shattered by mysterious noises, and he is plagued by nightmares that cross into reality. Whose shadows lurk in the dark corners? Is that lonely house inhabited by restless spirits of the past or something more sinister? What is that sound that chills to the very bone...scratching? Join Michael in a suspenseful adventure, as you explore beautiful and chilling environments. Prowl dark corners and solve puzzles leading to the solution of a tale begun with obsession, and ending with madness and murder. The Director’s Cut includes an alternate ending that might be more shocking than the original.

Dated, obtuse, with a fair share of pixel hunting, as usual for the genre, but with an immaculate ambience. Always wanted to try this, it being the first commercial adventure game from my country. If you're one to enjoy Gone Home/Resident Evil/Amnesia for building the game around an intricate moody place full of secrets, you might enjoy this. There's also a certain terrifying sequence that's worth experiencing if you enjoy horror. It really got me considering it's a point & click game, but at the same time I'm a huge pussy, so don't take my word for it. I can definitely see why original players of this game built such a strong cult following around it, hell even Civvie made a video on it.

I'd love a modern counterpart to this, good thing the original developers are working in a spiritual successor that's been in development for 13 yea- hmmmmmmmmmmmm... that's never releasing, is it?

★★½ – Average ✅

this 2007 game has a launcher, if you remember those, featuring a quote from an obscure game magazine focused on adventure games proclaiming "Game of the Year!", as if they somehow managed to ignore all the other nuclear bombs that dropped on the video game market that year

besides that timeless quote there's a big red "PLAY" button , under which is another equally big, equally red button stating "MORE GAMES..." that, when clicked, it opens fucking internet explorer (i didn't even know my laptop had that) and redirects you to a dead domain

the game is also very good and due to copyright hell it's now considered abandonware so you can just download it whenever

Scratches has a bunch of flaws that have become hallmark to the classics of genre; it can be obtuse and pixel hunty so you're probably going to need a guide and I say that as a genre veteran. What really makes up for its mechanical flaws though is the phenomenal atmosphere. Scratches is one of my favorite horror games just because how it establishes atmosphere and builds dread while almost entirely avoiding stuff like cheap jump scares. The soundtrack and sound design are great too. If you don't mind a slow pace and some adventure game obtuseness, Scratches is well worth the time.

Boring and busted.

The first hour of this game involves you trying to turn the lights on in your new house, calling your agent for help, missing the electrician at the front gate, calling your agent for help again, checking the fuses, calling your agent for help again, and then looking for candles. Maybe it gets super duper scary right after that, but I will never know! Terrible controls, broken hotspots, and insanely slow and awkward pathing through the house made it tough to give it even that much time.
