The simpler and joyful times when every game on the market didn't had to be sterilized and filtered to not be cancelled by twitter mobs, when putting a t-mobile on the table was cooler than putting a black brick, kanye's new albums didn't suck, and main protagonists were someone with actual personality instead of some wood log with body type 1/2. Add in some soul and a good ass soundtrack with atmosphere and you got yourself a video game that rockstar would never dare touching again, 2008 era time capsule in a xbox 360 home console disc.
Pretty good arcade street racer with a nice selection of cars. Unfortunately it's a bit grindy, and one mistake can ruin a 5 minute race. You can unlock cheat codes by finding secret barrels, but activating any of the cheats prevents you from gaining money, experience, or advancing the main story. I like it, but there are much better-looking racers these days. I also don't like how much it thrashes the optical drive on my PS3.
"I got more than that."
"Just making you nervous is all."
"Yeah, yeah."
"Sorry!"
"Can’t take the heat, stay out of LA."
"I’ll apologize after I win, how’s that?"
"Get out of the way!"
"Gotcha!"
"Knock knock!"
"Stay out of my way then."
"Just playing a little rough is all."
"That was on you!"
"Pull over and let the big boys race."
"You like that, huh?"
"Right, whatever."
"Who’s fault was that? Not me."
"Like that?"
"Bam!"
"Your fault!"
"Whoops!"
"Come on, that was nothing!"
"Hey!"
"Get off the road!"

This is still the game I compare every open-world racer to. And they all lack that tight frantic city racing that this game got so right.
Honestly, I wasn't able to re-play that game since my PS3 died a few years before the PS4 was released, so there is probably a heavy dose of nostalgia mixed in. Still, I really miss this game and there are these days when I almost buy a PS3 just to play that one again...
PS: Actually bought a PS3 again mostly to play this game again 😅

While let down by a poorly done end game that mostly revolves around grinding for money and being rewarded with radiant quests (more or less) and a handling model that is akin to a soap bar slip-sliding on a sheet of ice, the game makes up for it in spades with one of the best soundtracks in racing, and a Los Angeles that feels truly living and breathing, ironically, only beaten in virtual form by Rockstar creating a fake version of it in GTA V.
i feel mixed about this game. while it does sort of bring back the driver personalities of 2, it just feels like some GTA cutscenes rather than midnight club. the gameplay is fine and there's many variety in races. the customization is fine, I believe there was more to it than the third game. but goddamn, i felt like this game dragged on for forever.
