If you enjoy the simple thrills of early arcade racers with a trucking twist, 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker might deliver an hour or two of nostalgic fun. Race against the clock and an obnoxious rival trucker across a few American highways, hitting checkpoints and dodging traffic. While the core idea is amusing, the game suffers from repetitive gameplay, awkward controls, and bland visuals. Don't expect a deep or polished trucking experience, as 18 Wheeler is more of a fleeting arcade curiosity than a true simulation.
It's not one of Sega's best racing games, but the trucks give the driving a unique weighty feel. The cab designs are fun with lots of stuff moving around, there's a nice soundtrack, and every level has at least one Denny's, what more could you ask for really. This is better played on the arcade cabinet, but the console ports are fine enough.
my uncle got me this for my birthday as a kid on the PS2. i remember sucking at it so badly that i'd always get beaten by the timer before i'd even driven for like, 3 or 4 minutes, and then i'd put it away. and you may be reading this and going "well, how the hell did this get 3 stars if you couldn't progress at all through it?"
the other reviewers are 500,000% correct. the honk button in this game, for some inexplainable reason, is so much more fun to push than in any other game with a horn. get it just for that.

A very goofy 30 minutes that feels like a joke game someone made up but actually existed. Not just in the concept but also the design.
Just the right difficulty by default on the dreamcast version
I would have been really upset if I had purchased this for full price back in the day though, again 30 minutes long and barely any replayability unlike something like crazy taxi. Only 4 levels.
6/10
