I like the concept for this game a lot, and getting it to work with my friends was always a blast. That being said, not having dedicated multiplayer is a huge problem. It's not as much fun without other people, but using third party programs to emulate having everyone in the same place made it work just fine.
I think this is genuinely one of the coolest games I own, everything about it is just right: The Narrator fucks, the pixelart is goofy and beautiful, the gameplay is very varied and fun thanks to all the different monsters present, and the concept of mixing the Mario party 3v1 gameplay with a roguelite dungeon explorer is innovative and wonderful for a party game.
The biggest sin this game committed was not having mod support, followed closely by not making more updates after adding the third boss. Seriously, the bosses get old real fast when you get the same one three games in a row.
It's legit my only problem with it: I want more of it.
If they made a sequel it could potentially be one of my favs games ever

Has this chronic problem of the dominant strategy to be "wait for someone else to do something and try to snipe at the last second."; has some blatantly broken player items too which are global pool so the rest of the party misses out. It's very hard to feel like what you're doing matters, which is disappointing because conceptually I think the game presents fantastic ideas.
This game is hands down one of the best party games of all time. I love jackbox as much as the next guy, but Crawl perfectly balances the desires of a gamer (depth) with the simplicity for a layman (there are literally 2 buttons). The handicap mechanics are so strong yet fair and you never feel cheated. It's a wonderful game and I'd recommend to anyone looking for something other than Jackbox games (for up to 4 people)
This is a remarkable local multiplayer game, for many reasons. The idea is innovative, it has a wide variety of items and monsters, and it ties together cooperative and competitive elements well.
My only critiques of Crawl are that:
1) The combat can start to feel a bit boring as the Hero after a while. I find myself usually settling into a similar combination of weapons and spells every run because:
2) The items are not very well balanced. There will always be better and worse items, sure, but when the imbalance is so strong that my friends and I have to ban a couple (such as that shield that makes you invincible when you face away from attacks) because they are so overcentralizing gameplay there is an issue. It appears pretty much every other run too because the item pool is relatively small.
3) There is no online multiplayer available. I know that it was never really promised by the developers, but I think that would greatly improve the replayability of the game, especially if your in-person friends are starting to get tired of it and you want to keep playing.
Overall, Crawl is a great game. I know I mostly focused on the negatives in this review, but I would recommend it to anyone looking for a local multiplayer game.

Definitely one of my favorite examples of an intrinsic rubber band mechanic: Players have affable versus gameplay, but whenever the Human players level up, all opposing Monsters level up, resulting in more opportunities for the Humanity to be traded more often. To make it more exciting, the Monster Role goes not to who dealt the most damage, but who dealt the last attack, meaning it could go to anyone, which makes it all the more exciting. The perfect kind of couch versus. Required reading.
Straight up my favorite couch co-op game ever. It's a real shame that it doesn't have online co-op as it's hard to get my friends to play through Steam Remote Play Together and as we live far apart it's rare we get together at my place specifically to play this. I'm often daydreaming about making this into an arcade machine for myself. I wish I had the talent. This game deserves to be its own furniture.
