All Clover Studio games are masterpieces in their genre. Every time I play it again it feels like I'm more and more convinced it's just the perfect game for me. It's so unambiguously a PS2 game at it's core, with it's simple yet extremely satisfying combat, the story is just one long excuse to travel all different kinds of places, and of course how hard it leans into it's own art style.
It succeeds in setting a serious tone, presumably to respect the folklore most of the stories in this game are based on. But especially on my last playthrough I was reminded just how funny the game is. And at no point does it feel like these two different tones clash with eachother.
The PS2 version is my favorite, as it gets the closest to that painting look the game is going for, and it includes that amazing credits song that sadly no other version has. Although hilariously you can still listen to it on the Wii version via the sound test. The PS4 version is also fantastic, and probably the version that is easiest to recommend.

Having played on the Wii, this feels the most natural method, with the player drawing brush strokes for the best play experience. A culture-rich comedy with strong combat and beautiful art. Even now, the stylistic nature of the game lends it to remain beautiful.
To keep it short, an experience that is not one to miss, being one of this reviewers most pivotal experiences in video games.

myself and my younger sister played this game so much that the disc eventually would skip in specific areas of the game, in particular an endgame location. models wouldnt load in, music would just cut out, ammy would lag mid-jump or just freeze entirely

While this game has its flaws I really think what it did in its time was unique and pretty incredible. I feel like it was a pretty perfect storm for the PS2 era, though admittedly it is less impressive than it could have been given that it released 2 months before the PS3 came out. I don't feel like there was a game before Okami quite like it and I don't think there has been one since.
Oh my god this game... It's everything. The first game I ever one-hundred percent completed. My favorite Wii game. Gorgeous, if flawed. (Especially when it comes to the Wii copy and it's... interesting way of determining brush inputs.) If you haven't played Okami then, seriously, give it a shot. It's on new consoles now, give this game some love.
