this game was a fuckin slog to get through sometimes (what did i expect from a romhack made in 2004) but it's still gen 1 so u can sweep the E4 and champ with the level 50 mewtwo you find at the end of the safari zone

The predecesor to Prism.

Was a start for sure but I had fun here still, even with the bullshit level increase near the end

It's good

i thought this game was going to be filled with poop-based pokemon. i was disappointed heavily.

Pokemon Brown is... limited. It's the first major "original content" hack for Pokemon (as far as I know) and it shows. Many, MANY area layouts and concepts as well as most of the major character art is lifted directly from the original game and just scrambled around a bit. There are some clever liberties taken, but a lot of the time it just feels like a jumbled up Red or Blue. This includes all of Red and Blue's considerable issues. The champion's Politoed did literally nothing except spam Amnesia on my Venusaur for over ten turns and then die to Leech Seed, because Amnesia is technically a Psychic attack and the AI of Gen 1 Pokemon is too stupid to avoid spamming a non-damaging move. Numerous Pokemon at the end of the game were still wasting turn after turn using Leer. In an attempt to offset this, (and I assume because the creator was quite young at the time and just thought it would be cool) trainer levels near the end of the game balloon to somewhat cartoonish degrees. The champion's Pokemon were all at least 25 levels above my own, but I have hyper potions and revives and know how to stall for time. If you've ever wondered why you haven't seen more hacks of Generation 1, this is why. The scripting in place would have to be largely redone in order to make something that isn't as busted as the rest of Gen 1 is.

Brown is somewhat impressive given that it was first released in 2004 before Generation 3 had even run its course, but it's hard to say it's worth playing today for anything more than historical curiosity. It's not different enough in practice from the original games to carry all that much interest.
