The Quality Goes Down As The Game Continues Nonetheless A Great Game

A poorly translated (chinese devs) game with very superficial understanding of the SCP universe

Um dos melhores jogos de SCP q já joguei, simples assim.

I like the idea of SCP anthology series but this sadly fails on the writing and gameplay side.

The gameplay feels very much made for phones as only interactions outside of moving is that you hold, slide or push stuff and it's all very generic and forgettable. There is also lots of standing around and listening which is also not very riveting.

But the biggest problem is that the writing is just kinda terrible outside that children's book section which was decent. Everyone there is suppose to be pretty much expert of their field but for some reason everyone sounds like they're written by a teenager.

There are some nice visual flourishes here and there and I found the toaster thing to be rather fun but other than that it's just not worth it.

This game is currently in the Humble Choice for November 2023, and this is part of my coverage of the bundle. If you are interested in the game and it's before December 5th, 2023, consider picking up the game as part of the current monthly bundle.

An anthology of spookiness

SCP: Secret Files involves players experiencing 5 stories, each a different style and different gameplay, at least from what I gathered online. The two stories I went through were a very simple collection minigame and a spooky office.. Well kind of. SCP as a mythos is all about everyday objects and the anomalies they hide. The first story had a desert that… Well honestly I’m not quite clear on but the experience heavily unsettled me, and the second story had me jumping at mannequins though I’ll hold off on saying more.

At the same time this being an anthology, that means five stories, five types of games, and five different qualities, and not all of them are the best. The desert story was a bit weak and the office was damn creepy. Both will probably stick with me, but the direct experience wasn’t consistent, and the other stories will also change formats which means who knows what the rest of the game is.

Pick this up if you’re a fan of the SCP mythos, and want to be spooked, if not completely terrified. This has a great quality to the writing and experience but like I said, it’s going to be up to the player, and I can’t say more than I won’t be returning because I don’t like how nervous this game was making me. But that’s a positive opinion on a horror game because I’m a little scaredy cat.

Wonderful anthology game. It isn't perfect, but overall the presentation is super clean. Visuals are probably its strongest point. I was honestly a bit floored when the SCP-1762 story transitioned from artwork into this delicious painterly shader; I embarrassingly had not realized gameplay had started. The writing isn't anything groundbreaking, due in part to this being an adaptation, and at a few points it can come off stilted, but they really did what they could with the source material. The SCP-239 tale had me at the verge of tears, due to a really strong narrative flow, and some surprisingly solid voice acting. I do feel they chose a strange SCP to wrap up the game with (it probably would've been better if they swapped 239 and 426's places in the story), but the segment itself was hilarious. Overall, pleasantly surprised by how polished this game is. Not without its flaws, Secret Files achieves what it sets out to do. Please, more games like this.

A good spooky game without too many jump scares. Loved the break with the magical paper dragon story. Did glitch at the end and couldn't plug in the toaster in the jail cell. Restarted multiple times.

Well, since there is not a single adequate game, except for this one (possibly with an exception), according to SCP, it can be forgiven for its very short duration. 4 stories with different narratives. I would like more stories and more serious things... and I'm this tall and this wide, and I need to make TOAST!

I think this game, as a cinematical SCP experience and a walking sim, does it job pretty well.
My only real complaint is the total inability to skip upon cutscenes, even those who are only videos.

Also, the game is technically completed, but abandoned.
You can tell they left a kinda open ending with the entirety of the last SCP story in my opinion, perhaps to be expanded upon via DLCs, but sadly it won't be a thing.

Extra note: do the second SCP story deathless on story mode only.

Completed with 100% of achievements unlocked. An interesting concept, SCP: Secret Files comprises a series of relatively short sequences, each completely distinct in style, exploring the behaviour of a supernatural phenomenon. The core of the game really is in the stories that it tells, though there's somewhat more to it than a "walking simulator" - and in those stories it finds a good balance of exposition and mystery, leaning somewhat into a horror angle at times. The gameplay is admittedly a bit clunky which means that it's not as satisfying an overall experience as it might have been, but still a worthwhile experience. I gather that the game is just a taste of a much wider 'lore' and while I'm not immediately compelled to seek that out, it's certainly a possibility in future...

The writing is frankly pretty dogshit, and the voice acting isn't good with, but it's honestly fun and the environmental storytelling is great.

The game is separated into five ~50 minute chapters. Each of which focusing on a different story, and a different SCP, with two of them interestingly veering away from the horror game feel.

Despite the game's high focus on narrative, the writing unfortunately feels very clunky. Your involvement in the stories is also pretty low, you're mostly walking through stories that have already taken place, making them into a video game adds very little here.

I do appreciate that the story is all original content though. One of the five SCPs is completely original, while the parts you explore of the story of the other four SCPs that are not explored in their original articles.

I would not recommend this game as an entry point to the universe of the SCP Foundation. But if you're already a fan, you might get a kick out of it.

really wish this was better, but becomes increasingly less polished as the game progresses

Incredibly biased SCP fan here. It has hit or miss voice acting, but overall SCP: Secret Files is a pretty good walking sim SCP game reminiscent of What Remains of Edith Finch. The main storyline had an incredibly rushed and out of place ending, but each of the SCPs got pretty good tales with various visual styles and gameplay mechanics in each of them.
I just hope that the planned DLC is either gonna be pretty cheap, bundled together, or just straight up free, since unless they end up as longer stories I can't see paying that much for any of them individually based off the length of the base game ones.
