Sega was really trying hard to make a Mario kart equivalent from its own series of games back in the day. They even attempted that with Team Sonic racing not too long ago, which became an absolute flop of course.
This game is not that much different from All Stars Racing from what I could see at the time. Basically some road courses were altered into air or water so that multiple modes of transportation will be utilized.
The game is somewhat similar to Mario Kart but not really. It is very very close though. I have no idea why every video game character back in the day had to have a racing game of some sort. We have Crash racing, Diddly Kong racing, Mario Kart, ... and way more than I could count. Also Sonic in a car just makes no sense at all.
I see this game as a pretty average Mario Kart clone, just like the original one. You won't be missing out on anything if you don't play it.

It's a pretty good racing game. Not quite as good as Mario Kart, for example, but pretty varied with some of the weird stuff I like in a kart racer, a variety of interesting sega characters, a pretty good campaign mode. It crashes occasionally and i know it's not the hardware, but I pick it up every now and then and race a minute.
As a kid I remember got to target and my mom said I could pick out a couple of 3ds games. I chose this one over Mario kart 7 and I picked up sonic lost world too. I actually loved this game as a kid. I remember it running like a console game and was really impressed and got far on it. I sold it a long time ago so I'm not sure how it held up. But I remember having a good time.

the only way you could ever get me to say sonic & all-stars racing transformed is a bad game
a very poor port of a very good game! the frame rate is absolutely abysmal and it's insanely buggy.
