I don't know why I skipped right over to Sonic 3 after playing Sonic 1, I guess I was just really eager to play it again since I've been kinda obsessed with that game my whole life, but man Sonic 2 is a great time! The classic Sonic games are just super addicting, sweet and short experiences that I feel like I could replay over and over. There's a bit of a dip with the one-two punch of Metropolis Zone and then Sky Chase, but besides that I had a great time with the rest of the game. My hands were fuckin sweaty while trying to beat the Death Egg Robot, but god damn it felt satisfying to do it! Sonic 3 is still my favorite in the classic series, but this isn't far behind. Great, great game!

I don't know if I would've gotten all the emeralds without the Origins coin system, cus Jesus the special stages are brutal.

Similarly to the other classic Sonic games from Headcannon, this is without a doubt the best way to play Sonic The Hedgehog 2. Sonic 2 is the classic Sonic game I've replayed the most, so seeing it in widescreen with 60 FPS is such an upgrade, and makes the best parts of this game (anything before Metropolis Zone) that much more enjoyable.

Same as Sonic 1, just somehow even worse.

An upgrade from its predecessor, this entry feels more fast-paced, making the levels feel more fun to run around in; the minigames are more easy to understand, and they feel like part of the story, as they unlock the possibility to use Super Sonic.

+ Chefes bem divertidos

Extremely fun game! If you play it i do highly recommend against getting the chaos emeralds as i did not enjoy those stages at all

pretty ok. some level design is really good but some is pretty bad. i'm not a fan of the presentation; it's somewhere in between sonic 1's lack of polish and sonic 3's abundant polish in a way that makes it an awkward middle child. Falls off at the end; the amount of times you will get completely blindsided unfairly is off the charts. This is an issue for the whole game but gets worse at the end.

Alright Sega, let's see what you've got.

So my first impression of this game was not too great, the core reasons being Tails' AI being absolute shit, and the fact that there are only 2 acts per zone. Wow. However, after further reflection, I've decided that Tails' AI is forgivable because AI was not that developed back then, but as for the 2 acts per zone thing, it's forgivable because of the zones themselves, really, because this game has the BEST designed zones I've ever seen (in terms of looks, not actual level design, with the exception of a few zones which I'll talk about).

Emerald Hill Zone just feels so bright and alive. Actually, I prefer Emerald Hill Zone over Green Hill Zone. It just feels like this is an actual area with the lively atmosphere, and the sharp coloring, but those fucking monkeys bro. Really?

Chemical Plant Zone is quite literally the peak of level design. I don't just mean it in terms of looks this time, but how the zone is actually designed. You zoom around, which is key in Sonic games, you encounter some challenging parts, but you can also enjoy it nevertheless. The soundtrack also gives it a whole 'nother vibe, making this zone peak. The zone also really lives up to it's name, unlike some sonic zones (cough, Spring Yard Zone, cough).

Aquatic Ruin Zone. Also looks good, but it felt like it was too short, and I'm not really a big fan of levels which have anything to do with water. Water levels make me feel anxious and Sonic moving so slow in the water makes me want to surrender to Eggman. The level was fine really, just ok.

Casino Night Zone. Yeah, it also looks good but I think this zone had some weird level design. Elevators? Use spring to push yourself? The enemies were so unremarkable I can't even remember any of them. Fine level I guess.

Hill Top Zone. I got intense Marble Zone flashbacks from this zone, it looks good but really its just fine, like most Sonic 2 zones. It was cool and everything, but the similarity to Marble Zone just made me feel at edge. The whole lava chase part was definitely one of the Sonic moments of all time. Not too hard, a little too easy, but suspenseful nevertheless.

Mystic Cave Zone. No way, I got so popular they made a zone off me?!? All jokes aside, looks great, and it has some actual good level design, I like it. But it makes me feel...uncomfortable, for some reason, because of the whole spooky cave tree mysterious atmosphere. It was a weird level, but an appreciatable one.

Oil Ocean Zone. I wouldn't say it looks too appetising, but it looks accurate to an "Oil Ocean". Really just a fine zone, but one problem I had with the level design was when you would fall into the endless oil. You could just spam jump your way back up. It was impossible to die in this zone, which is stupid. The oil slides also felt like they were making up for the lack of content in this zone.

Oh my god. Metropolis Zone. It looks accurate to it's name, but what in the name of Blue Hedgehog was this? Just as I'm about to enjoy this zone for its atmosphere and soundtrack, the level design ruins everything. The crab enemies are placed in low ceiling areas as if they want you to die, the mantis are also too painful for a regular enemy, the starfish just make you fall down, go to another area to reset the screw elevator, and fall to another starfish. Yippee! And they had to give this zone 3 acts, didn't they. Amazing. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it to some extent until Act 3, but I can never call this zone bad because of how good it looks.

Sky Chase had SO much potential, but it was all wasted. Waste of time.

Now Winged Fortress is what a zone near to the end of the game should look like. It combines all the mechanics you encountered up till now, to make up for an enjoyable combo, with the exception of the starting part, but the shortcut for it made that starting part nonexistent.

Before I move on to Death Egg Zone, I'm gonna leave a short note about the bosses. They were fine really, nothing too special, nothing too easy, nothing too hard, simply the most neutral bosses I've seen.

Now, Death Egg Zone. The fact that you have no rings makes you so much more terrified, when in reality, the bosses are easy, but you really can't be carefree around them. You need to be vigilant. Mecha Sonic and the Death Egg Robot were just some appreciatable bosses overall, with great designs, and the add-on of no rings just makes the bosses seem neutral.

To end this review, no I have not forgotten about Hidden Palace Zone and its prototype. They're really just too unremarkable for me. The chaos emeralds. Wow. I wish I could turn Super, it's a cool mechanic and all but THE MINIGAMES?? No way. I played Sonic 2 on mobile and it's literally impossible there, so I never got the opportunity to turn Super Saiyan, but nevertheless, a cool mechanic, really cool Sega, but you didn't even fix the minigames in the 2013 version. No mercy, huh?

Overall, four solid stars.

Super fun, though getting all the emeralds can be frustrating. Some of the stages don't feel very fun to explore, but once the emeralds are found, its a blast to speed though everything!

My status:

(Obtained all 7 Chaos Emeralds, August 26, 2015)

just sonic at his best really

the 2P mode is so fucking dead

4.5/5 - Great
This is a review of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2013) as a game on it's own, not of how it remakes and improves the original.
In my review of Sonic the Hedgehog, I stated that what made it so special was it's revolutionary physics system. That game to this day handels like almost nothing else in the industry - you gain momentum running down slopes, you can roll into a ball through loop de loops, jump at inclines, to gain increased height - it all combines to create a system that is fast, dynamic, replayable and full of skill mastery.
Sonic 1 also screwed up by rarely truly taking advantage of these traits as well as it should have. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the other hand, is a triumphant sequel. It takes everything that SHOULD have made Sonic the Hedgehog great, and truly makes sure it does.
Sonic 2's levels are almost entirely intricate, dynamic, open, and very fast. The designers have truly understood what makes Sonic work. These stages have a lot more speedy setpieces in them, but they give a well needed thrill that combines well with more involved sequences that, with enough skill, can be combined together to never lose your momentum. Sonic 2 is an immensly replayable game because of this - every level is super memorable and unique yet super open, you never take the same path twice. Even the game's water level can now be played without touching water once if you're good enough! Especially with the addition of multiple playable characters - the original Genesis release only had 2 identical characters, but later with the Sonic & Knuckles lock on we got Knuckles, and the 2013 remake brought with it flying Tails. Different characters can approach the level design in different ways so the game is always fresh. Sonic 2 is truly a joy to play.
But level design is not all that improved. The brand new Spin Dash move is a game changer for mainting flow and gaining speed, and the speed cap has been removed for some crazy fast moments, the 2 act structure and larger zone count keeps any area from overstaying it's welcome, the zone themes are even more colorful and diverse and the music is some of the best the Genesis can output, and the game overall feels grander too, with the help of tails tagging along enhancing the adventury feel and the climax being quite climactic for a Genesis platformer!
Sonic 2 does stumble in a few ways though. For starters, the physics have yet to be perfected due to the still present roll jump lock hurting manuverabillity (unofficial mods can fix that but that can't count, but Origins fixes it too) There's also the climax, which while cool can be a real slog - Oil Ocean Zone is rather unimpressive, Sky Chase is very boring on replays, Wing Fortress is rather confusing and full of pits, and the worst of it, Metropolis Zone and the Death Egg Robot being frustrating and poorly designed.
But actually, I find that the 2013 remake has fixed these! When playing in ultrawide on Android (or even just Widescreen on consoles), the improved visibility helps with a lot of the blindsides that ruined Metropolis, and makes for a zone I actually really like! I find Metropolis in widescreen to be a fast, super challenging, well crafted final trial. The Death Egg Robot had no visibility issues, it was ruined by bad hitboxes - but with the newly added Insta Shield enabled (through the level select sadly, but still a welcome feature) it actually becomes a challenging game of timing and I enjoy it a lot this way too. It's still far from perfect, this odd climax and some other issues along the way hold Sonic 2 back, but it's still a really great game.
It's thrilling, challenging, replayable, catchy, and memorable as hell, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will always be a banger!

Really good game. Huge upgrade from sonic 1.

Better than the first, not much else to say

Massive improvement from Sonic 1 as it takes what worked and upgrades it 5x
the bonus stages are mid tho because tails' ai is so fucking dumb you're gonna lose rings due to this dipshit

A lot more refined than the first game and CD. The level design is vastly improved. This game overall is a lot more fun. There’s some frustrating moments, but the good greatly outweighs any negatives.

So much stupid "gotcha" design and also why is Metropolis Zone 3 acts? Kinda insane this is near-universally considered better than sonic cd lol.

I liked playing as amy :) Her hammer attack is fun.

I played this game back in 8th grade. I did one playthrough and it was pretty fun. Everything from Metropolis Zone and after kind of sucked though. The special stages were a fun challenge though

metropolis zone is one of the best classic sonic zones and gets far too much hate because of like 3 enemy placements

Argumentos: Tails 🦊

I really wanted to give 2D Sonic a chance, but I just can't get into it. So many of the stages have traps & platforming that kill any momentum you're trying to buildup with Sonic. Unless you have the stages memorized you're always going to run into obstacles since there's not enough time & draw distance to react organically.

Recomendo.
