State of Decay 2 is a nice “busywork” game - it’s satisfying to tick things off your list, clearing up the map and gradually taking back the area from the zombies…

BUT…

It makes me feel the way I do whenever I spend a bit too long doom scrolling on my phone.
It’s an empty experience. A Ubisoft or Sony AAA open world experience, sans story. Empty calories.

Although the game is owned by Microsoft, it looks like an Indie game. It's been updated for years, but there are no noticeable changes. The biggest problem with the game is that it doesn't have a story with a cinematic presentation that can be followed. The game was made entirely for online purposes. The only objective is to build a base and then defend it against zombies after upgrading it. When you play alone it gets boring and repetitive very fast. There's really nothing to do in the game because everything feels pointless. The game only looks good as an idea on paper. They didn't have the budget to really develop it, so as a real game they couldn't really make it reflect the way it should. What I'm most curious about is the budget of this game. I've seen much better work come out of indie games developed with Kickstarter donations. Not only do they not care enough to allocate a budget for this series, but they've been releasing updates and trying to improve it for years. The contradiction the developers are in seems funny now. I don't know how the third game will be, but it's sure to feel very dated compared to the year it was released.

(Self Declaimer I played this game on Steam Deck)
I played the game on and off starting on XB1 but actually bought the game and decided to do an actual commitment to the game, overall very fun! I recommend it with friends but maybe start your own run to make your own decent characters to deal with unforeseen consequences in other player maps

[Main Story]
**
I bought the game on steam sales after a friend of mine invited me to play this game with him with potential that collapses, throughout the game. The concept of creating a community, gathering resources to build things, I think the idea is quite good, but the game is just that, with a clichéd story mixed in, the game after a while becomes quite repetitive, no longer talk about how frustrating the combat system is and the bugs that exist which can lead to the death of the character in the blink of an eye. As I said the idea is good but it needs something more.

This is such a wonderful and fun zombie management game, and I CANNOT wait for State of Decay 3.

An awesome sequel I've played on and off for years. The game definitely builds upon what made the first game great. As a third-person action/survival game with a focus on community management, it definitely is a unique and enjoyable experience. Highly recommend, especially if you can play with friends.

Nothing overly exciting felt like the first but just another coat of pain

Decent zombie survival, if a little cookie cutter. I do like that your characters permanently die if you screw up though.

State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition is a game developed by Undead Labs and published by Xbox Game Studios, and is obviously the second in a game series that I have a love hate relationship with. Don't get me wrong, this game is good and I like it but I've also gotten frustrated at getting my s h i t kicked in. Regardless though I do love it, and here's why:

To me the meat of the game is obviously in it's main mode. You randomly pick survivors (except if you do the tutorial) and you end up in one of four or so regions as you go out of your way to search for supplies, settle into bases, create weapons, find and ally with survivors where you will need to keep them happy (as well as hostile ones) while also completing two main objectives: fulfilling a legacy (of which there are four) and clearing out all the plague hearts on the map. Plague Hearts are basically where plague zombies spawn and they're basically the more difficult version of a regular zombie, not in combat but due to the fact that if it harms you enough you basically get infected and you have three actual hours before they basically keel off. Now these plague hearts are difficult but you can always recruit one of your survivors to help you destroy them or get a friend to help you out. Whereas this game can be played without it, online coop is where A LOT of the fun comes from and helps offset the difficulty the combat can present sometimes. Keep in mind the combat is rather simplistic, you just hit them and then execute them on the ground or shoot them BUT you can with a lot of training unlock special fighting moves to help you out. While simplistic in nature, honestly the combat is satisfying though you still have to be careful because you can be swarmed quick and screwed.

With this combat of course you're asking "well are you fighting just zombies?". There are hostile survivors who will shoot at you and attack you with all they got but there are also the stereotypical "special" zombies that just kinda jack from Left 4 Dead (ex. Bloaters are Boomers, Ferals are Hunters, etc.). Whereas they're not bad, they just kinda fill the stereotypical roles that every other zombie game seems to have kinda just taken from Left 4 Dead. Regardless that kind of caps off the combat that I can remember to mention at the moment.

To cap off the main mode, this is where you'll most likely be spending your time in and truth be told if you're looking for a Walking Dead community simulator thing that's not directly based on the IP this is basically your game. There's no real main story in this mode other than the objectives above you do side quests for people and you become attached to your characters before they're ripped apart and butchered cause of bad luck or one mistake. That being said, there are lulls sometimes and it can be kind of boring waiting for objectives to pop up depending but it kinda is what it is I guess.

The next mode is Heartlands; this is considered the "Story Mode" of the game. It takes place between the first game and the main mode, you'll choose between one of two groups to go into the first game's location. Not much is different other than skills and certain quests but the main goal is the same: find survivors, build your community, kill some plague hearts but with the added quest of helping Dr. Hoffman take down Plague Walls. With this quest you will need to build up your arsenal and be on your A-Game because you WILL die if you screw up because you will be inundated by plague zombies and their special units. I didn't hate this mode, it's not bad for those who are into State of Decay's lore but I wouldn't really play it more than once.

The last mode is Daybreak, which is basically your "survive in one spot, keep rebuilding the wall, protect a person and kill every zombie" thing that seems to be in a lot of games. I did one game of it and to be honest I don't hate it, it's kind of a standard mode I just don't really wanna play it again and to me it didn't really add much to the game itself besides rewards you can unlock in the main game.

Overall, I liked this game mostly other than a few things here and there I didn't care for. This is one of those games to me that has the potential for infinite replayability with the pregenerated survivors. Playing as them I formed an attachment building these random characters up before seeing them get ruthlessly eaten. If you're desperate to save or keep certain survivors you can spend influence to send them to the "Legacy Pool", where you can always call them in if you need them later on or in a different survivor enclave entirely if you want (though alternatively you can access them for free if you start off in a new game as well). That being said, I can understand why people would give this game mixed reviews overall; there are some things that aren't really fleshed out as well as I would like (base building would be my pet peeve, I'd prefer to just be able to build whatever wherever instead of limited to certain squares in a single area but I digress), the survival aspects for the most part is still the same as the first game (which I'm ok with but I can understand others are not), sometimes you'll be driving and you'll get stuck every five seconds and it's annoying. I'm sure there are many other things I'm not touching base on, but the character limit on Steam makes it iffy to go over everything. Some last things I will mention is that at the moment they're making State of Decay 3; I wasn't excited at first because I had some frustrating moments on Xbox One with it (mostly confusion with the legacy pool deleting all my best characters) but having replayed this I'm heavily interested now. The second thing is that according to a buddy of mine there's actually a mod or a character editor in which you can kind of create your own survivors and edit stats so to me that adds to the replayability of it. However if I were to put out a recommendation, I'd say just take some breaks in between play sessions and such otherwise some of the flaws tend to kind of poke out and make itself aware, that and it gives you a reprieve from the fear of killing your best survivors. I'll repeat a statement I made earlier in the review: If you're looking for a Walking Dead Community simulator with no attachment to the IP or no pregens, this is a good title to look into. Just be aware it'll kick your s h i t in and it has some issues.

Also shoutout to my dude Dewey for getting me this game thank you very much!

Fun gameplay loop as well as the management of what you have to do to survive such as scavenging or upgrading skills. The downsides are that it will get repetitive and you will lose steam. Overall, fun game but repetitiveness here and there.

Fun gameplay loop but ran out of steam quickly for me, was hoping for a bit more storytelling but it was a fun time for the first few hours.

If you like management sims and action games, may I introduce you to the holy grail. I love so much about State of Decay 2. The base-building is interesting, the randomized nature of the characters is engaging (if a little frustrating), and it's just fun to run over zombies. It's important to note that while the maps and location-types on the map are set, the loot and enemy placement is random. There is some logical consistency (i.e. food resources at restaurants) but the actual supplies you get will be random. I think that's fun, but it's something everyone should know going.

If you want to manage some people at the end of the world, you could do worse than State of Decay 2.

Does a lot I've always wanted from a zombie game that I haven't really found elsewhere, and the main gameplay loop and combat/resource management is fun. The major downsides are the total lack of a story and the fact that there's no real drive or directive to progress other than just filling your map with a bunch of the same "destroy the plague heart" task.

Great game and replayability is great on this game with the several settings that are available to customize difficulty.

I'm letting my Xbox Gamepass subscription lapse at the end of the month so my friends want me to use it as much as possible for co-op games til then, so I've now played this for the first time. super cool game. One of the better zombie third person games I reckon. Might have to get it on steam on sale this year with my allowance.

- At times too much going on at once

| My Score |
4.5/5- Engaging and just really fun zombie survival game that many people will fairly dismiss as a boring loot simulator but to someone willing to hop on with a group of friends, this game offers some of the most fun you'll have with a multiplayer survival game and for me personally created some great memories and turned this game into something my friends and I keep coming back to

Making up plotlines while progressing in the free mode is my new hobby.

Fun zombie apocalypse with lots of fine tunable difficulty options to let you find your own playstyle. The included DLCs of Heartland (story mode) and Daybreak (horde mode similar to COD Zombies) are nice to play every now and then but campaign (which has no real story) is the core of the experience.

A perfectly fine video game. Played the main game and didn't really feel anything, and then did the Heartland DLC and it was pretty good fun. Sadly it kinda just doesn't have a lot to it and I lost interest pretty quickly after finishing the DLC.

I played solo, which was probably a determent to the game. I played through two maps and increased the difficulty between them. I also think I came in after a couple of quality-of-life updates, which I looked up and it seemed like this was the right time to play it.

It's a very well-designed zombie game that has great mechanisms in place to escalate the feelings of dread, desperation and endless, uphill battle a zombie apocalypse should feel like. It has great a community and base-building aspect that adds to this, where infighting and sacrifice are necessary and important parts to survival.

However, it's pushing against repetition, after two maps I considered myself finished with the game. The changes to the environment, where to build a base or take resourceful locations, alongside the limited zombie and mission types, there's not much to force a change of gameplay or encourage me to increase difficulties and start a new community in another map.

One of the best zombie games

The more I play games from this franchise, the more I think of each installment as growing a foundation that could be a really interesting survival game, but hasn't reached that point yet. Despite the new "threats" and slightly more in-depth NPC and community interactions, it ultimately feels like it needs another overhaul to become something truly spectacular.

On top of that, the DLCs aren't worth much, either; the best one takes away most of the sandbox elements and pits you against an ultimately unfair challenge, and rest are milquetoast at best. All in all, I can't see why you would choose this game over other games with more depth, like Project Zomboid.

Straight away, I must note that this particular game has features that tick many of the boxes for what creates an enjoyable and re-playable experience, where the only downsides are where the bugs slow you down. The game gives you a relative freedom that is often absent from many game to date, and is a surprise why it had flown under the radar in the gaming industry, as such a game with unique features such as the ability to make each situation unique, as well as the ability to create characters that are always slightly different in many unique ways, to the skills they have to the way they look, and what you arm them with of course. The freedom of the game is there, but does not leave you in the dust, with its timely missions and bounties always giving you a list of things to do, with replayability skyrocketing after the new legacy pool update. Personally, one of the best experience of gaming I have had, with both friends and otherwise, it is a game that I frequently find myself coming back to for more... and it keeps on giving
