It's really just UFO but done better.
Collecting animal spirits is your gimmick this time around, and it's handled way much better. For once, there's no consequence to getting the wrong combination, as the game will still give you an invulnerability state akin to PCB's cherry system no matter what you collect. That aside, I still find that getting the right combination (3 or more of the same spirits) is your best chance at survival, as this game is tough. Enemies were made tankier and take longer to die, so dealing more damage is crucial in playing this game.
Hot damn, there's barely any life drops in this game. Your best chance at getting them is getting the special spirits from midbosses, but they're rather cryptic in how you get them, and some characters or animal spirit choice may ruin your chances at getting them.
The plot is one of the more insane ones in this franchise, and the OST is really neat and fits the mood greatly. Not one I'd recommend to people starting this series

my first too hoo experience was the demo of this game. even now, i cannot 1cc the game as any marisa on normal (but i can as all 3 reimus and made it to the last spellcard as wolf youmu)
beast spirits are very memorable as a mechanic, the cast is fantastic, and keiki is tied for favorite boss fight in the series with chimata.

My favorite Touhou out of the "modern" era, has one my top soundtracks and the cast is pretty charming, the Animal Spirit gimmick is also pretty interesting.
One main issue is that I had some visibility problems in some levels, I guess ZUN was too drunk making this one and did some questionable color choices.
Overall, had a blast. (Saki is peak 2hu btw)

To me, this game did what UFO couldn't. And that's make an alternative resource collection mechanic feel really good actually. While I cannot stand the UFO collection in well, UFO, I actually really enjoy collecting the beast spirits in this game. In part, it's because this game is a lot more forgiving. If you grab one of the wrong type, your little combo you're specifically going for isn't ruined.
Overall this game is quite good. The ost is easily in my top three, and the stage bosses are quite fun! There's a lot of neat spell cards here, and I'd probably say this is a bit harder than the average Touhou game when strictly talking about spell cards. However, this is balanced by the fact that you can get extra "bombs" by collecting otters specifically.
Overall very good game, I quite like it. Very fun experience and you can be a little wacky with it if you want.

The seventeeth! Touhou! Not counting a bunch of side games!
High highs and low lows in this one. The plot is conceptually one I like, dialing up the stakes again a bit. There are beast spirits from hell invading and your girls (Youmu is playable again this time heck yeah) team up with one of three, which decide some of your properties, to go stop it. This ends up being a hilariously convoluted gang war involving four different factions that your character never actually gets any kind of grasp on before being used as a pawn to end the thing. I am only like 50% clear on what's actually going on but then in the extra level you have to deal with how beating the last boss just made things actively worse. It's the easiest extra level in the series though, if you want one to start with.
The downsides are these: I do not love the animal collecting system, which is just a variation on the UFOs from 12 which I am also not a fan of. One's milage may vary there. Also, the animal you choose influences your character and affects her personality, and I feel like a lot of the dialogue is just trying really hard to establish the flavor of asshole you've chosen such that it forgets to be interesting at all. There's just not a lot of jokes or charm in a series that normally had both in spades. THAT SAID the later parts of the game where the story is more prominent are great. Keiki is an instant favorite character for me and her theme is like maybe the best song in the series? So despite my complaints I would still call this one a banger.
Also you fight a dead baby in level 1 I guess.

UFO but good. The many particles effects and some background make visibility pretty shit (stage 4 is the worst offender)
What the game does well is in its setting, the idea of 3 yakuza families essentially fighting for domination of hell but making a truce to fight a common enemy is cool as shit. I also really like how the game ends by pretty much being the same pre-incident with the idea that some things are impossible to change. Saki, Keiki, Mayumi and Kutaka are also based.

Number of tries Normal 1cc: ...1 (Yeah, I beated this at the very first try, died a few times tho)
Character used: Youmu + Wolf
Fifth game of the ''Fourth era'' of Touhou Project, an excellent Touhou game, ZUN really nailed it with this one in everything, music, cast, plot and even the main villain.
We have the revamped UFO gimmick from Undefined Fantastic Object with the partner gimmick of Subterranean Animism and the double shot gimmick of Ten Desires, and it was so good how good it all merges together on this one.
Plot is... Kinda like a Yakuza war with personified animals and a Pegasus thrown in there, cool one tbh.
Music is something different but still retains the style that ZUN is well known for.
The only complain that I have about this game is that it has poor visibility problems on certain stages, specially Stage 5 and 6, I died 2 times on Stage 6 for bullets that I assured didn't touched me, too bad, It would've been a perfect game otherwise.
