We've been up to our necks in Hotline Miami's brood since 2012, so the "post-violence neo-wave tactic-action" game rarely hits like it used to. With this in mind, Katana ZERO might actually be the best game of its ilk. I mean, I played Hotline Miami 2, so it's just short of a miracle I'm buying into one of these things again.
It is lively, well-paced, creative, and thoughtful. Barring my deadened enthusiasm, it sums up to be a fun time.

2019 is year of the samurai, with two dope sword-slashing games in Sekiro and now this. This was a slick mix of Hotline Miami and indie-style platforming and combat. Everyone dies in 1 hit, including your character, but the respawn is instant just like in HL. Its hard to get salty with that kind of system, and it moreso lets you gradually figure out a gameplan that will work. They also pull a HL through the storytelling and how trippy it was, but it does its own thing and doesn't end up being super convoluted or vague as a result. Best of all, they actually took the time to create a unique Hard Mode that complicates the enemy placement and introduces new tougher enemies. Really wish more games took the time to do things like this.
Main gripe is the game length. Game just ends after a fairly straightforward final boss and a cliffhanger ending. There's supposed to be free DLC though, so we'll see what comes.

Katana ZERO is about a Neo-noir Samurai who takes a lot of drugs that gives him a different perception of time, which is given to him by his psychiatrist. Who also gives him assassination contracts.
The slick neon inspired artstyle and great sprites gives this game a great atmosphere that enhances the game.
The story isn't too strong, but the writing and the character are really good.
The gameplay is fast paced and exciting, it's one shot for both you and your enemies, it's hard but fair. The slow-mo ability is really well done, it's never too OP, but it's a powerful ability that helps you in a tough situation. The great animation work really helps the fluidity of the game, and I liked the little touches like how the screen shakes when you kill an enemy.
The music is really great, it helps to set the atmosphere and goes along with action
