this is the most professor layton game i have ever played. if you want a game with a man named "hershel layton" in it, have i got news for you

I am much like the specter's true nature

Sure was cool of them to give Professor Layton's London Life a bonus visual novel-style side mode, but boy, it went on for a loooong time.

Finished both the main game and London Life

my least favourite professor layton game from the ones i've played but i liked it still! funny puzzles go haha

1/09/2022 edit: I ACTUALLY THINK IT'S A BIT HARSH TO SAY MY LEAST FAVOURITE because i enjoyed it! i liked this game as i believe from memory! it's hard to choose favourites and least favourites i think just cause im indecisive but anyways. YEAH!!

The Last Specter is a bit of a step backward for the Layton series, while Unwound Future added more tension, pace, and more integrated puzzles to the story, the Last Specter seems to do the opposite. It's still a decent game mind you, but a lot of the puzzles and story simply aren't as up to par as the past two games have been. At the very least, Emmy is a great addition to the Layton cast, and I certainly want to see more of her and the professor.

Professor Layton and the Last Specter is the first game in the prequel trilogy for the series and it wastes no time letting you know how much more expansive and immersive the world has gotten since it's inception. This map and it's characters feel incredibly lived in, and full of personality. That's the first thing I noticed starting this game and it's what hooked me immediately, and that's what I must really applaud this game for. Out of all the Layton entries, this game has one of the most interesting and engaging introduction chapters out of the series thus far, and quickly it became my favorite entries. HOWEVER, this changed over the course of the game's story. As the game creeped closer and closer to it's conclusion I quickly realized that the ending felt incredibly rushed. It felt like it moved a breakneck pace from Layton and crew not clear on what was going on in the town to having it all pretty much figured out in the span of like a chapter which felt kinda off considering the mysteries felt more gradually revealed in previous games. Despite this it didn't hamper my experience at all as I still found the origin story of Luke and Layton's friendship to be incredibly compelling as watching Luke start off as a weary and cynical shut in, blossom into an excited and cheerful boy felt natural, and heartwarming. The gameplay remained mostly the same however I felt there was slightly less puzzle variety out of previous entries, but that could just be me. The focus seemed to be mostly on math puzzles and less on logic puzzles which sucked for me considering I'm not good at math, like at all. Despite this I really enjoyed my time with Last Specter, and I'm excited to see the overarching mystery of Descole play out for the remaining 2 games in the main series.

"Okay but what if the demon was a mecha and Nessie FIGHTING EVERY NIGHT" is silly in the less fun way than previous twists.

I like Emmy though she's cute.

Decent game, could be better tho. Also a decent prequel and made me like Luke a lot more as a character.

at the end of this game the main characters literally cure asthma. very proud of them!

This is the fourth Layton game. After the excellent Unwound Future, I expected this one to be of similar quality, but sadly, it's not. The story is unremarkable. Don Paolo doesn't even make an appearance. The pacing takes a hit at the end of the game when the minimum puzzle requirement you get is really high. I also felt like there were too many math/geometry puzzles. Felt like I was in high school again.

best puzzles in the series and little london is very charming, if unnecessary

extremely average layton game. that's not to say it's bad, but it doesn't do anything all that interesting especially if you've played another game in the series. if you're coming to it for the puzzles and not the story though, you probably won't be disappointed

i don't know how they made a game about luke the least impactful game in the main 6 layton games, but somehow they did. maybe i'd like it more if i wasn't european and therefore wasn't missing an entire chunk of the game

Professor Layton and the Last Specter is worse than the OG trilogy in my opinion. However, that doesnt mean its bad. In fact, its as good as the og trilogy, and at times even better. However, at times the story was genuine shit, the ending was by far the worst of what i played (failed terribly at being emotional) , and the villain was by far the blandest and boring (i heard he gets better in later games) Emmy is amazing though, im looking forward to more of her in MM.

Overall, a very solid installment. Even if there is a slight decrease in quality, its recommended for layton fans. 8.5/10

Another Layton game. The last one on the DS. It is better than unwound future. Not so many sliding puzzles this time around which is always good. The characters were cool though the Descole and Loosha are weird. The anime cut-scenes continue to impress on the DS. Most of the puzzle were great. Will dive again for some missed puzzles.

Likely the worst in the series, never really lands, ending feels abrupt, no real emotional hits, puzzles still decent.

what if instead of picking up on that cliffhanger, we make a PREQUEL

Playing through series again, in timeline order.
