super fun game with a lot of charm, probably the best of the series and a top 5 2d mario game, just wish it was a little longer and not soooo easy

This shit was part of my childhood.

A super fun and nice little gem on the DS! It revived 2D-platformers for the modern era, so that is quite a feat! I like the fast pace of each level and how every world and even every level has something a little unique to it.
There is an abundance of secret exits, more than I remember, and they are super fun to find! Some secret star coins are a pain though, especially the ones requiring Mini Mario. Blue Shell secrets are fine though, since the blue shell is one of the best power ups of all time.
Good game, play it!

I played this when it came out and always held the opinion that it was mid. But I replayed New Super Mario Bros. (2006) in 2024 and you know what? It rules! The level designs are great. My only complaints are that Mega Mario isn't actually very fun and having to play as Mini Mario is kind of a buzzkill.

I was there in 2006 for the hype, but never played New Super Mario Bros. to completion until now. I'm pleasantly surprised by how well it holds up. The difficulty is a bit breezy, but the gameplay just feels really good. And while not revolutionary (and at this point, kind of old hat) it's undeniably one of the best games on the ol' Nintendo Dual Screen. Maybe not worth the commitment of a full sit-down, but a fun time for a few minutes here and there, when you're on the go.

For Super Mario series the game is just average.
Speaking about 2D Marios this part is a next one after outstanding Super Mario World games from SNES. And of course taking this fact into account I expected a lot more from the game. But this game obviously suffers from a crisis of ideas. SMB 3, SMW, SM64 all of them got us used to new innovative mechanics, new creative puzzles and a great level of immersion into the game. This part tries to follow this approach but hardly manages to do it. The game is very secondary. Levels design can not offer you anything extremely new, there is minimum of really creatively hidden coins and difficulty level is rather low. In my opinion this point is especially annoying. Instead of thinking of really difficult platforming elements or not standard level design creators just force you to get certain power-up on one of the previous levels in order to collect 3 big coins from a current level. It looks very artificial and doesn't gives you enough satisfaction for beating of such levels. But worthy to say that closer to the end games becomes more difficult and hence more fascinating. What for enemies they're pretty standard for the franchise. Not all of new enemies which appeared in the game feel matching Mario world what also negatively interfere the game's atmosphere.
Probably the only thing which was really new in comparison with previous parts was cute graphics and soundtrack. Nowadays after playing more modern Mario games it won't surprise you but back in a day I assume it was really impressive. Especially taking into account handheld type of the system where you played the game. Probably this aspect and nostalgia about legendary Super Mario Bros games leaded to over 30 millions of sold copies. And that was a surprise for me that the game has been sold almost 3 times better than SM64 on Nintendo 64.
Ideas here seem to be just drafts for further games in the series. Let's say 3 big coins in 99% percent are easily available for a player. Later developers started hiding them really well and it became one of the main challenge to find them all. Spending of these collected coins give you just opportunity to open new mushroom-house with power-ups and save the game when later you'll need collectable items in order to move to another world.
For me all these weaknesses of the game are largely explained by the team who developed the project. That was not a team directed by Shigeru Miyamoto but a team of Shigeyuki Asuke (who surprisingly will lead development of Super Mario Bros Wonder later). Asuke tried to follow the main concepts of original creator but for me didn't have such a good feeling of the series and appropriate level of taste.
Nevertheless that's still a nice game. It's still about our favourite Mario, Bowser and Peach. It still can surprise you in several places and gifts you feel of satisfaction for beating of several difficult and tricky levels.
IMO it still has an important place in series since it became a fundament for the series growing and development.

Still holds up, really built up the foundation for future games until they ran the well dry.

Es un muy buen juego, y es bastante bueno para introducirse a la saga (yo me introduje con el) tiene una dificultad decente tirando a fácil. Gráficamente me parece super bonito para un juego de DS, y los niveles tienen mucho carisma.

ive crunched some numbers and found out that not only does THIS ds game look like ass on the wii u, but literally every ds game does. plays as well as ever though. let's a go

Me marcou muito porque joguei criança no nintendo ds

I now know how to play as Luigi, what can you say about your achievements?

Pretty satisfying platformer, not innovative, but filled with little charming details and level variety. Running through it may be boring, but 100%-ing can be quite challenging and gratifying , if not irritating with some secrets. Music is cool, yet I am kind tired oh Bah-Bahs in almost every track. Three new power-ups: mega mushroom, mini mushroom and blue shell. Mega mushroom is fun the first time and some rare times to pummel through open levels, but extremely unusable in any other scenario. Mini mushroom is more fun: you trade extra hits and ability to destroy enemies by jumping on them for extra mobility and diminutiveness. Blue shell is unintuitive to control, sometimes even detrimental to use, but can help you spin though level without getting hit or smash your way to secrets. Sometimes you are forced to use these power-ups to enter secret exit or find Star Coin, main collectible. And here is my biggest gripe with this game (which is the biggest gripe with some of the Kirby games): you have to use power ups from different level in order to collect everything. You see mini pipe or mini gap and sigh heavily, because you need to return to this level with mini mushroom, equipped or in stock. I understand the challenge to play the level with somewhat inconvenient powerup, but it wastes so much time to collect power-ups, keep it through the level you collected it and go through required level only to get one certain thing. And sometimes mini pipes only lead to extra lives and coins! And some secrets are not marked and placed in seemingly random spots, which is also aggravating. But even with these nuances it is satisfying to collect every coin from every level and find shortcuts, extra levels and exits. Sure, themes for bottom screen as a reward at the end is stupid to place after completing the game. And challenge mode is barely making any difference outside of two or three levels. But I had a lot of fun with New Super Mario Bros.

Mini games are mostly the same from Super Mario 64 DS. Some are good, but some are only here because they need to show you DS capabilities. But who am I kidding, enable my gambling addictions all night over poker table, Luigi, I know you understand me.

If Mario, then only Bros! 🔥

(It’s decent)

For as tired as the NSMB series got, this game does not suffer from the same problems as it's successors. It constantly introduces new mechanics and only uses them once or twice, never outstaying their welcome. SO MANY INTERESTING MECHANICS GOT LEFT IN THIS GAME; I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. Oh, and unique bossfights.

A great game tainted by the repetition of it's predecessors. Scott the Woz put it best when he said the game still has a bit of Funk to it. The mini-games are a blast even if many were just taken from SM64DS. The multiplayer was also an underrated feature, a shame it never got revisited in later games.

This is my first 2d mario game and I honestly enjoy it more than i expected, even though i am not really a platformer kind of person

i used to love playing this game so much i used to pee myself rather than stopping the game to go to the bathroom (i was 2 years old in my defence)

This has gotta be the best one out of the New series in my opinion. Game is super fun with unique boss fights and has a unique soundtrack, probably cause its the first game in the New series, I disliked that future installments just reused the same songs from Wii and remixed them. Its refreshing to go back to this soundtrack.

This was the Super Mario Wonder of '00s kids.
Surprisingly, it holds really well for today's standards. It does wonders (no pun intended) that this was the first 2D Mario platformer in decades.
It has it all: original ideas and enemies, a great soundtrack (even better than Wii's) and some wacky power-ups.
This game is the definition of "timeless".
