Ashes 2063 is a fantastic total conversion of Doom II, there's a ton to love about it but the biggest thing was how it wore its inspirations on it's sleeve. It sells a distinct vibe hard and does new things that end up working wonderfully.

A great set of enemies, arsenal and maps, they take a lot of inspirations from build engine games of their time. The increased interactivity with the world and the variety of levels keeps it fresh. None of them are too long or too short but pull off their concept to great success.

The expansion pack, 'Dead Man Walking', is a set of levels with much more focus on fast paced gameplay, lacking some of the variety from the base game but making it up with much more brutal combat and tight level design, it ends up living up to the title fully.
