its interesting how much this game excels and stands out from the crowd while fundamentally feeling such an absolute step back for the franchise, particularly compared to 7 remake a few years ago. still, sets a standard of quality for the "numbered final fantasy game" which has been long lacking.

i think the most egregious issue in this game is the lack of options. you have no real party members, one playable character, one weapon, one fighting style, and can at most simply just swap out which cooldowns you're using for the same general rotation. as far as rpg mechanics go this makes god of war ragnarok look like baldur's gate or something.

still, what you do have is excellent action gameplay, phenomenal presentation, a gripping narrative and a cast of characters who will have a place in final fantasy history forever.

probably the worst villain in final fantasy history though
