Not quite as good as the first game, taking the emphasis off of its open-ended collectible hunt and onto something much more linear (and less meaty) doesn't fully pay off imo. But I realize that's totally up to personal preference. That being said, it's still unmistakably de Blob in all its vivid, creative, and singular whimsy. The story here feels unexpectedly deep - tackling themes of herd mentality, deleterious mass media, cults, and political self-indulgence among others. The 2D segments that color the main building objectives are a neat new feature but oddly, again, just don't capture the same charm of the more simplistic versions the first game had. Nonetheless there's still just something so warm and cozy about these games' worlds - the levels are all great and the music is to die for with such rich variation, there's nothing else quite like starting out one of these maps and having a million ideas rush through your head all at once about how you're going to colorize it. I'd kill to see a third one.
