For being a handheld game with 2 buttons the game is really compact.
The world of Koholint Island is a really good idea for a story because it is set in a dream. That idea would make a really interesting and in-depth story. However, Link's Awakening DX doesn't use it to its full potential.
The biggest problem with the game is item management. The Game Boy Colour has only two buttons and items are constantly needed so you will need to go into the menu and equip them. It only takes a second to do but the game will have you do it so many times.
