3D Series I'd like 2D games in

You know, a lot of people talk about transitions into 3D, but what about 2D? What series should transition into 2D?

Using 3D->2D pretty strictly here. I considered putting Luigi's Mansion here, but the gameplay in that game is already mostly confined to two dimensions.

Make your own if you want to.

I think there's a lot of potential for a beat-em-up that keeps a lot of the series staples.
Kinda surprised this never happened considering how much Fromsoft used to milk the series. You'd have to use 3D models, but a side-scroller that keeps many of the series' elements could be cool.
Not sure if they'll carry all of this over into the next few games, but I think the building mechanics could be a little easier to use in 2D, and the verticality could make the level design a little more interesting than most other Open-World conversions to 2D
Yes, we have the old Kid Icarus games, but I think both aspects of gameplay in this one could translate well into a twinstick shooter.
I'd like a Star Fox shmup, preferrably after a new, normal Star Fox game.
I just think this kind of game in a Metroid-style could be cool.
I imagine a gallery shooter like Wild Guns, while player movement is confined to 2D, it still has a 3D environment so grenades and lasers can bounce off of surfaces.
I think a side-scrolling action game would work well with the parry system and the fast pace.
Very obviously not happening, but I yearn for more 2D puzzle platformers like Flashback and The Way, and this could be a solid basis for one.
Obviously we have 2D Mario, but few have the thematic, cohesive world or expressive movement that some of the 3d games achieved, such as Sunshine. Basically, an inverse 3D world, 3D Mario style in 2D.

This is such a cool idea and concept for a list, and also extremely interesting; you've gotten me thinking how this could work with the z axis out of the question, specially considering a 2D interpretation of BOTW and TOTK technically exists, since they made a prototype of the game as if it were a NES game, and I really wish they would release that in the future... Also a 2D Devil May Cry sounds and a Star Fox 2D shump sounds like fantastic ideas.

And by the way, regarding the last one, a fangame called Super Mario 63 attemoted that same general idea of turning the 3D Mario structure into a 2D game, and while I haven't played it, many really like it and seems to be an at the very least fun time. You might have already heard of it and I'm just repeating information you already know, but still, thought it was worth mentioning.

Amazing list!

@DeemonAndGames While making the list it was tough deciding what really could work in 2D as well as in 3D. I thought about Portal, but I think 3D spaces create more noise for puzzles and the valid portal surfaces would be harder to convey in 2D.

Super Mario 63 looks kinda interesting, I might check it out.

Hey guys, after a bit of searching I realized @SlasherMcGirk actually did this idea first. Check his list out: https://www.backloggd.com/u/SlasherMcGirk/list/top-10-3d-series-of-games-id-like-to-see-get-a-2d-game/

@DeltaWDunn Thanks my man. It is really something i think about from time. Especially DMC.

Now that you mention it, and ignoring some fan-games that tackled the idea, there is an official 2D portal... but maybe a Contruction Bridge Simulator based around the IP doesn't really count xDDD.
