It is easy to be dismissive. Be it art, people, food, events, the rapid, continual pace of consumption necessitates the compartmentalisation and categorisation of happenings. One can be dismissive in the positive and in the negative. The complex emotions elicited through our lives fade as quickly as they arise. Perhaps it is a consequence of language, an inability to express the phenomenon of experience. A meal's interplay of tantalising nostalgic aroma and comforting warmth in the belly is, for most of our lives, recalled as good - if it is remembered at all. A film is so bad it's good, some self-fulfilling label that sets expectations and ebbs the need for analysis of artistic merit and failure. A book is well-written. Your ex is a bitch. Last Christmas was good.

In the new hyperactive mode, wherein consumption happens largely for the sake of consumption, categorisation happens more readily, more aggressively, less critically. A director is washed. Your favourite is 🐐-ed. Films are kino or coal. Aesthetics are reduced to haphazard strictures, art pinned as frutiger aero, frasurbane, girlypunk neo-Y2K vectorheart nu-brute. Games are flavour of the month, kusoge, kamige, kiige, bakage, normiecore. Bring something up, and everyone has an opinion, a rote repetition of regurgitated refuse. Exhibit passion for that outside the zeitgeist, and be lambasted. Convey discontent with the beloved, be accused of poor media literacy. Are we even partaking of that which we parade around, or are we playing an elaborate game of telephone?

Even Burger King Orientation CD-i Training cannot escape unharmed. A wave of ironic praise and genuine befuddlement at why this exists, why it is revisited. One must be seeking attention for having such a quirky thing on their profile. It is impossible that it is enjoyed on a deeper level, as a response to a wider fascination, as a dive into historical (non-)import. The new hyperactive mode intentionally seeks signifiers which mark the self as interesting. An intentional facade which begs it won't be scrutinised.

But just because you have constructed this mask does not mean we all wear it. And perhaps I am being dismissive of your own thoughts. The truth of the matter is you don't care what I think, or why I feel a certain way. And to be fair, I feel the same animosity towards you. We are strangers at the conflux of comparison of preference.

I am filled with a genuine glee when I 'play' Burger King Orientation CD-i Training, but maybe it is best I keep the reasons to myself, as with so much else.

After all, you care not for what I think, so what is the difference if those thoughts are no longer laid bare.

This is (at least for the time being) my last substantial review here. I have increasingly grown out of step with the site culture more broadly, and have quite frankly had enough of being frequently mocked, chastised, and name-called. It is plain to me there was a shift quite some time ago away from what got me into writing here int he first place. That's fine, but it ain't what I'm here for, and having become good friends with so many folks I looked up to over the years, I don't really need a place like this to state my case on what I like. I'd rather just tell the people who do care and engage in conversation rather than get on a soapbox.

If you care to see more long-form writing from myself and others, please visit BumpCombat.net.
Further videos are coming sloooowly on my YouTube.
You can keep up to date with my archival efforts and whatever else on Twitter.

Take care.

Salute. I'll miss seeing your write-ups on here, but I was glad to have been around while they were still being regularly posted. I can imagine that the longform, meticulously-researched and revealing pieces might be able to find a more favorable audience in the areas that you're switching focus to. Best of luck!

Will keep tabs with you on socials and Gaming Alexandria! I'm also working on my video essays and site stuff, which is a lot to handle alongside Backloggd, so we'll see how well I can balance my participation either way.

A shame to see you stop reviewing here, yours were easily some of the best on the site and will be missed. I look forward to seeing whatever else you write, wherever its done. Good luck! (Previous comment deleted due to spelling error)

Wish you the best in your future endeavors and look forward to you and the rest of the team's work on Bump Combat.
I’m gonna miss seeing your reviews on here, you always had something interesting ro say about games I wouldn’t have taken a second look at and that’s something really valuable. I’ll make sure to check out your work on Bump Combat.

Genuinely respect and appreciate your perspective on things so damn much, especially this one.

Easily one of the best write-ups on this whole site. I haven’t seen your other reviews but I’ll definitely be following your other socials and Bump Combat

Figured I might as well give a 6ish month update since folks something wonder where I went. I put some pieces up on BumpCombat and intend to do more but I have increasingly little interest in games as objects. At least insofar as objects to write about. I get a lot more enjoyment presently out of archiving games-adjacent materials, with a focus on bishoujo/eroge and coin-op stuff. You can find most of my stuff on archive.org or on GamingAlexandria. My Yakyuken history was used in part as the basis of Game Preservation Society's history of eroge a few months back. I am (still) working on more videos. My 177 video was plagiarized but things worked out. Honestly you can just scroll through my twitter feed to see what I'm up to.

I remain genuinely upset at being called a gooner repeatedly for the preservation of adult materials. I remain genuinely upset that my writing has led others to experience heinous works while ignoring their contexts. I remain genuinely upset that quality is drowned out by quantity here and elsewhere. Sorry but milquetoast 'reviews' about games where you can just replace the proper nouns and have it apply to any game are not interesting, so why put effort into writing on a platform that seems to prefer that over Real Shit?

I stream my archiving on Twitch. I am starting my MLIS soon. I feel happy about my presentation and appearance now and post selfies a lot on twitter. All my stuff is in my linktr.ee on my profile.

I might come back one day, but probably not. I'm not super comfortable talking about games outside of specific contexts. And I don't chase obscurities much anymore, I just play what seems interesting. Uhmm, that's it I think, bye!
