After 5 months of playing this game, I’m still at a loss for words. Now having completed the story, I feel even more convinced that this is, simply put, one of the greatest games of all time. A true-to-form classic RPG which boasts a variety of experiences, bidding gamers to return again and again to see what different types of stories they may tell in this video game adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. It offers rich and compelling characters, satisfying gameplay, and agency unlike anything I’ve ever enjoyed in a video game. The cherry on top is the multiplayer, delivering on the collaborative and social aspects of DnD by affording multiple players to participate in the story and make pivotal decisions together. It’s a shame Larian is closing the book on Baldur’s Gate 3, because the DLC potential for a game like this is astronomical. Though the game, as it stands, is more than enough.
The Quarry is an ambitious game with a tremendous supply of “replayability.” Boasting an impressive cast of seasoned actors and trending stars, this game feels more akin to the likes of Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch film than to any other video game I have ever played (I have yet to check out Until Dawn, but it is officially on my list). Despite the game’s gripping plot, interesting characters, and captivating aesthetic, its shortcomings are as clear as a full moon in the night sky. Occasionally shoddy graphics and clunky scene transitions prevent this game from reaching its true potential. Though it is quite foundational in its efforts and I can’t wait to see what is next from Supermassive Games.
