Im going to slowly playthrough most of the mainline Zelda games as there are very few I have properly completed so no better place to start than the 1986 classic. Prefix, I played this using the NES collection thing on the Switch.

Like most NES games there isn't any narrative, just a quest. Link has to save Princess Zelda from the evil Ganon. Very simple and the groundwork that the later entries build off. The meat of the game is in the dungeons and overworld exploration. The map is very easy to navigate if you find one online, it makes everything much easier. For the most part the dungeons are good and age surprisingly well, but the last two dungeons ramps the difficulty up out of nowhere which was quite rewarding considering how OP the sword is in this game. Most items were useless besides the candle and bombs as most of them have a single use for the dungeon you get it in. The overworld is mostly just a forest looking area with Death Mountain up to the north and a graveyard to the west, fun to explore and find all the secret hidden rooms, which I have absolutely no idea how people were meant to find these back in the day.

When it comes to visuals, the 8 bit art style is really charming and I love all the enemy sprites, good variety of enemies as well for the first game in the series. Score wise it is iconic, The Legend of Zelda franchise has some of my favourite tracks of all time in it and the first game in the series sets it up well. There are a handful of tracks in this game but the one you hear the most is the overworld theme which is pretty much synonymous with the franchise at this point.

A true classic. I think this game has aged quite for an NES game,. By todays standards it is borderline required to either use a guide or at least a map to save yourself walking around lost, but besides that its a good start to my favourite franchise of all time.

Good review, but I have a feeling the map issue is gonna be worse for people who didn't grow-up with the game than your wording would lead them to believe haha. I had that issue with Metroid, and Zelda is like 2x as big as that game's map.

All good. BOTW, from what I understand, was like a modernized version of the OG Zelda.

Wow. I just finished playing through all the main titles of Assassin's Creed, and was thinking about what to do next. Zelda immediately came into my mind - it was one of my childhood favorites but as you said - some of the games you'd never played through or had the access to, due to them being released on a console you or your friends didn't own; and I stopped owning (and therefore playing) any console after the N64, but hear so many good things about some of the newer titles.

And now I find you, beating me to it :D

May I ask what console you are using to play these? Do you still have all your old consoles or are you planning to track them down? Because I did some research and heard that you used to be able to play most of them on a Wii U, which is unfortunately discontinued - but now most of the old game got ported to the Switch? I was therefore considering getting one, but heard rumors that there might be a new Switch coming out soon, so I'll probably wait...

@pygospa Its one of the most consistently good franchises going rn id 100% recommend playing through them.

For all the games that were on the NES, SNES, Gameboy, N64 and Gameboy advanced im using the Switch, which have these collections of games for old consoles. If you have switch online, you can play all of them besides the N64 and Gameboy advanced which you need the switch online expansion pass for. As far as online subscriptions go its fairly priced but I get that it can be a bit of a turnoff. I also have the HD remaster of Skyward Sword so ill play that on switch to.

I still have my 3ds copies of Ocarina of time and Majora's mask, im not sure how expensive these are now but I see them fairly often whenever im in a second hand game store but you can play these through the switch, its just the old version. The only game I had to hunt down was the Wii U remaster of Twilight Princess which is quite hard to get but I managed to find it at a good price, so I can play that and wind waker on the Wii U.

Easiest way to play the old games is through the switch, Id imagine the hardest ones to obtain will be Twilight Princess and Wind Waker as they have no port to the switch as of yet. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do :)
