Metroid Fusion is a somewhat polarizing game, and for good reason. It has a fairly linear structure and a stronger focus on narrative. However, these happen to be Fusion's greatest strengths. Everything is more of a threat to Samus in her weakened state. There may be no sequence breaks, but reclaiming your powerups from the X parasites feels gratifying in its own way. The pixel art and sound design in Fusion is on an entirely different level (for GBA standards), and the whole game exudes atmosphere.

Even if you prefer the more hands-off Metroid games, Fusion is just as worthy of your time as all the others. It'd be a shame to skip it.
