Mantra grinding keeps this game from being something truly special, but damn if it still isn't a great game. While the tone felt decidedly SMT, especially having just come from Nocturne, the themes and symbolism in this game felt different enough to give it a "fresh" feeling when compared to other SMT games. The aesthetics and presentation were great (Kaneko designs are incredible), and while the gameplay felt a little simplified without demon fusions it was still interesting enough to play and would make for a great entry point into the series. Some optional boss slog really exposed the weakness of grinding in the aforementioned mantra system, but I still ended up having a good time with this one and would recommend giving it a try.

Ngl I had absolutely no issue with the grinding just cuz the optimal place just makes it so easy and fast to get. Not to mention it's in the best dungeon of the game with the best ost, just made it fun imo

I was getting all the cells, selling them at max noise, and grinding (mostly) in the best spot and I STILL had an issue with having enough Macca. Sure, the method by which you can grind the AP for the mantras is relatively easy, but you have to also take into account getting and spending absurd amounts of Macca, especially as far as unlocked optional boss mantras are concerned, and knowing which spells you need in pathways that are hidden until you unlock the next one (which is made more annoying taking into account the aforementioned scarce Macca). The whole mantra system just felt a little clunky.
