It was my favourite game in the series for a long while, but I've grown to appreciate the first two and Return more in the years since. Still, it's a game with very few missteps and its highs are really high. Like, yes, Plunder Island is a repeat of the first game, puzzle-wise, but it's brimming with personality, and the rest of it is great. I know someone who hates what they've done to LeChuck here ("More slaw!") after he's terrifying in Monkey Island 2, but I think it works!
