I decided to replay this game on a whim partly cuz of the release of the new GOW game. I decided play it on Give Me a Challenge difficulty and oh boy does the flaws of this combat are ever more prevalent here.
The positives out the way first. I think the story is decent but largely because Kratos is the main character and pretty much carried by the previous games. I think the world building in this game is my favorite part. I like hearing Mimir tell his stories and its one of the few instances I didn't want to constantly use fast travel. The dialogue between Kratos and his son is cute. Atreus is kinda wonky at some points but by the end of the game he grows on me.
Annnd that's everything good I had to say cuz my god, does the gameplay really hinders on my enjoyment of this game. The main issue I have is that the camera is close to Kratos at all times. This is fine for cutscenes and story but its frustrating during gameplay cuz it limits the view of combat. I can't see what's behind me so I'm stuck relying on the annoying callouts and red indicators to barely dodge attacks. Oh did mention the dumb Move Assist both Kratos and enemis have? Boy do I love when I lunge towards the enemy I DIDN'T want to hit and enemies sliding towards me. Great game design guys. The combat feels even more dumb down than previous games. There's a lack of weapon variety leaving you with three: The Axe, The Blades, and your fists. Out of all them, I find the Blades of Chaos being the most fun to use.......until the game introduces color coded enemies....yay.
I could go on and on about how much I dislike combat of this game but I feel like I got my point across. God of War 2018 or GOW4, tries to take the series onto a new direction which I'm fine with but it all does is follow the every trend plaguing modern video games. GOW 4 doesn't do anything groundbreaking. It just has a really good story at the cost of gameplay. Honestly it's really disappointing judging from the trailers that GOW Ragnarok didn't do anything to fix issues I have with this game. Games are costing 70 dollars and all I'm getting is just prettier graphics? Tripe A games are down in the abyss.
