Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain is a freeware game based off of the 2018 hit platformer Celeste; it was made in roughly a week by a small team with little experience in the 3D platformer space. With that context in mind, it's not really fair (or possible) to give the game any sort of criticism. This is, without a doubt, a labor of love from a developer who made a game that has connected with people of all sorts. For fans of Celeste, this game has likely already been downloaded and completed; for fans of 3D platformers, this is a pretty fun and light add-on to one of the best 2D platformers ever made. The space you're given to operate in is a small but densely packed area which will have you double and triple checking each corner for that one missing strawberry. Its inspiration from 5th gen games is obvious, even without the eponymous "64" in the title. It's a fun and brief experience, and is more fun than any game made over the course of 7 days has any right to be-and even more fun than some of those nostalgic 3D platformers which would be its contemporaries. The lack of perfection that is so strongly felt in the 2D game is obviously justified, and it's easy to believe the camera and depth perception issues could be solved with time. But for a week-long passion project, it's impressive and fun and nostalgic in all the right ways. For Celeste fans, it will be a welcome brief return to the characters they love so much. And if it gets even just one more person to try the 2D masterpiece, after all this time, it will have been a tremendous success. And for those who already love Celeste, and the people who clearly had a blast while making it? It already is.
