Trails in the Sky the 3rd is the conclusion to my favorite JRPG trilogy. This game was one of the coolest, strangest, darkest, and most emotional conclusions I could have ever asked for. I'm not sure there will ever be another game truly like this one.
After finishing SC, I was honestly baffled by the choice to make Kevin the main protagonist of an entire game.
After finishing The 3rd, Kevin Graham is my favorite JRPG protagonist thus far. This game retroactively makes every scene with Kevin in SC five times better. His backstory, powers, position, and relationships are presented perfectly throughout this game. I'd be singing the same praises if Kevin and Ries were the only characters in this game but they're not. Every major character we've met thus far gets some sort of development that makes me like them THAT much more. For example, Julia and Mueller shot from whatever-tier side characters to characters that felt like they earned both my attention and respect even with a limited amount of screentime and gameplay usage. This goes for so many more side characters who I never would have liked nearly as much if it weren't for this game.
The door system, while divisive for many, was a home run in my book. Getting to see all these different parts of the story presented in such an interesting way as well as teases for the future of the franchise was one of the coolest (and most horrific) things I didn't know I needed. It was clearly a solution to a budgetary constraint (like many things in this game) and it's fucking awesome.
The music; however, is a big step down- SIKE IT'S FUCKING PEAK! BRAVO FALCOMMMMM
If you can get past the lack of NPC's and (sometimes far too tedious) dungeon crawling. This game is a masterpiece of a conclusion, boasting some of the greatest JRPG character writing, that wraps up the Sky trilogy in the most perfectly unexpected, experimental, and emotional ways.
