A lot of this game is rough and you can definitely tell what Sonic Team wanted to do is not what they had the budget and/or time to do, all the way down to the dlc. You can see it in the technical side, pop in is common all the way down to the best pcs. On the gameplay side, levels are almost 80% rehashes of old levels and aesthetics, and an underlying clunkiness in its controls that can make this game a bit weird to handle. BUT, this game is truly is a step in a great direction for the series. Open world running with Sonic is extremely fun, the levels themselves are good despite a return to tired aesthetics, and music and bosses that more or less sold this game by itself. This is game is truly good, but it is tiring to praise a Sonic game and have to follow it up with a whole lot of “but” and justifications of why it’s good.
